The official nail in the coffin for the 'name' case, denied without comment.

Re: Supreme Court denies Petition on Redskins name

Good, let's put this issue to rest. We live in an age were everything is offensive to a lot of people (political correctness). Why is it that all of a sudden things changed in the early 90's? People making money over lawsuits claiming sexual harassment, gender bias, etc. The Redskins name is a historic name and in my opinion I don't think it was ever meant to be insulting to Native American's.

I hope this is finally laid to rest. The fact that the vast majority of Native Americans (90%) find the name okay makes this a non-issue. If the name was truly offending Native Americans as a whole, maybe you do something about it. People need to find something better to do with their time….

Court won’t hear complaint about Redskins name

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Supreme Court won’t hear an appeal from a group of Native Americans who think the name of the NFL’s Washington Redskins football team is offensive.

The high court on Monday turned away an appeal from Suzan Shown Harjo.

That ends the latest round in the 17-year court battle between the Redskins and a group of American Indians who want them to change their name.

Harjo and her fellow plaintiffs have been working since 1992 to have the Redskins trademarks declared invalid. They initially won—the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office panel canceled the trademarks in 1999. But U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly overturned the ruling in 2003 in part because the suit was filed decades after the first Redskins trademark was issued in 1967.

The U.S. Court of Appeals then sent the case back to Kollar-Kotelly, noting that the youngest of the plaintiffs was only 1 year old in 1967 and therefore could not have taken legal action at the time.

But Kollar-Kotelly rejected that argument, saying the youngest plaintiff turned 18 in 1984 and therefore “waited almost eight years” after coming of age to join the lawsuit. The Court of Appeals upheld that decision in May, and the Supreme Court now has refused to review that decision.

This doesn’t end the legal battle, however. The plaintiffs have a backup plan: A group of six American Indians ranging in age from 18 to 24 filed essentially the same claim two years ago, but the new case has been on hold until this one was resolved.

None of the judges has commented on whether the Redskins name is offensive or racist, instead holding in favor of the football team on legal technicalities.

The case is Harjo v. Pro-Football, Inc., 09-326.

I actually heard HTTR played on the local radio news this morning, in PA!

I have long said they should feel honored given the fact they have been left with so very little to shout about. I've never really considered the name offensive, no more so than Blackhawks or Braves.

Despite the SC's decision, I have a feeling this fight will continue in one form or another as long as there's someone willing to continue it. It's been on-going for a long time now.

Their back up plan should employ the Seminole Tribe of Florida. They're the group who recently dropped a $1billion on Hard Rock Cafes, hotels and casinos. With that cash, they could've bought the Redskins, and you know they'd keep the name.

Re: Supreme Court denies Petition on Redskins name

Who knows... I'm just a lowly, long-time Redskin fan who no longer lives in the Washington, DC area. So whenever I see the "racist" logo, it brings me back home to some of, what has to be, the best memories of my life. If this is racism, then we need more of it.

Time for a name change. I like...

The Washington Wampanoag

The Wampanoag originate from New England so would be appropriate and alliteration is never a bad thing.
