Derrick Mason Retires?!

Best thing that ever happened to the fantasy value of Demetrius Williams.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason officially announces his retirement from the NFL

Re: Derrick Mason Retires?!

I wonder how much of it is fueled by him still being emotional over the death of his friend Steve McNair

So now what? Boldin? Braylon? Burress?

You would think they have to do something but none of those guys would truly be able to replace Derrick Mason in the offense.

Then again, this is less about Mason and more about pairing a legitimate NFL target with Mark Clayton, who seems to be a deep threat and very little else.

I'd go get Amani Toomer or even Ike Hillard on a two year deal.

Re: Derrick Mason Retires?!

Mason was a great player.. McNair's death probably is one of the reasons why he retires; he might want to see what's out there in life more than football?

To replace him, Toomer would make more sense, I guess.. Unless Ravens wants to trade for a player then I could see them going for Boldin.. He's best player who's on the market, compared to others..

He had also been trying to get an extension done over the offseason so yeah something changed his mind.

Mason was the only legitimate target they had last year. Flacco looked for him every time he was in a tough spot. If they don't get somebody else it's gonna be bad. I think Flacco and the Ravens will struggle next year.

I think the whole team is going to struggle. I don't see the being the same team Defensively since their D-coach left. I see them struggling to find an identity on D. On Offense this may be their catalyst. Atleast for the moment.

Re: Derrick Mason Retires?!

He hasn't filed his retirement papers with the league yet, maybe he just wants the summer off from training camp?

Apparently on NFL Radio he wouldn't dismiss the possibility of playing this season, but he said something to the effect of "that's the way I'm leaning right now."

The "leaning right now" part seems telling to me. I'm sure he's going through a lot losing a teammate and friend in Steve McNair and just may feel like he can't give everything that it would take to prepare and play football this season. I'm not sure, that's all just speculation on my part, but it seems plausible.

It is kind of interesting how one of his agents happens to be the founder of JockLife.com...so maybe they're using the site as leverage for a new deal?

Re: Derrick Mason Retires?!

According to the Baltimore media up here they seem to think that it is less likely he using it for leverage and just speaking his mind at this time. Playing hurt and having a friend die can change priorities like spending more time with the fam. The big question is if the Ravens go for a trade how much will Arizona and Denver up the ante knowing the tight spot of B-More

Re: Derrick Mason Retires?!

They have $3 million in cap room now, and there are a ton of free agent WR's (albeit old & problematic). These include
- Marvin Harrison (37)
- Matt Jones (26)
- Plaxico Burress (32)
- Reggie Williams (26)
- Amani Toomer (34)

Or less likely: Anquan Boldin, Brandon Marshall. I doubt Arizona or Denver would part with these guys unless there was a very sweet deal.

Another possibility is revisiting a trade for Anquan Boldin or Brandon Marshall. The Ravens had talks with the Arizona Cardinals before the NFL draft about Boldin but considered the asking price (picks in the first and third rounds) too steep. The team also explored trading for Marshall, the Denver Broncos' wide receiver, but the Ravens' interest never became serious because of his legal troubles.

Ravens should sign both Plax and Matt Jones. That way, when Plax shoots himself, Jones can dull the pain for him with cocaine.
