Re: Statement Win! Commanders Victory Post Game Thread
Regarding the D, yes it is not good, however, I don't not see disasterous blown coverages or players confused. Yes, they missed 2 yard gain tackles that turned into 10, but it looks like the defense actually knew where they were supposed to be for the first time in over a year. It is one thing when you have lower talent AND are confused, it is another time know where you are supposed to be, but are just lower talent. What do you do in this case? Well, the goal would be to minimize explosive plays and force field goals, or hope a team self destructs on offensive penalties. The truth is our defensive talent is just now understanding the scheme and our staff is still testing out who should be a starter in the secondary, DE, and even tackle. So yeah, the d hasn't forced punts the last 2 games while they are figuring that side out, but just think, we WON those 2 games when the defense is just now learning to play together. I expect the defense to start forcing punts and causing a few turnovers in a months time. Be patient, they are now at least in proper position to compete on defense. Just think, Percy Butler is playing a lot, who saw that? They are seriously tinkering in the basics before they try any trickery. They won, twice! While learning. Yay Yay YAY!

Re: Statement Win! Commanders Victory Post Game Thread
This is only a guess, but I bet both DTs are being doubled as there is no real pass rush threat. I would drop 5 in coverage too. Frankly think we need all 3 DTs out there all the time, although many are dogging them. I bet they are simply outnumbered. Just look at who makes tackles, it seems lbs are leading this. That sounds like our dts are functioning as space eaters at the moment with just 2 and no other threat

Yes if one of the links is broken the chain doesn’t work right, but I think our very expensive DT group needs to step it up regardless. |

Re: Statement Win! Commanders Victory Post Game Thread
agreed with that 100% . . . but they are both getting doubled continuously while our edge defenders are sometimes being handled by RB's and TE's rather easily. If we were better on the outside it would certainly help them out a bit in the middle. But that is no excuse for the missed tackles like Payne had yesterday, i think i counted 3 or 4 on him that ended up in first down runs. That should not be happening!

The defense will come around. This coaching staff will mold these defensive players. It takes a little time and the trust of the players to believe if they play like they are told it will get better.

Also, use Quan Martin and Chin to move up as blitzers against the QB.

Agree with this. Look at Dallas' defense now without Quinn. Enormous dropoff. Just hope Quinn has the dogs on this defense to make it this year. Allen and Payne need to step up, double teamed or not. I want to see more Johnny Newton.

Re: Statement Win! Commanders Victory Post Game Thread
I was saying in the gameday thread, we just dont have a consistent pass rusher, once we get that the rest of the defense will fall into place, there isnt a good defense in the history of the league that didnt have some type of consistent pass rush

Secondary, especially, corners need to be upgraded also. Imagine Sauce Gardner and TJ Watt on this defense. Watt had 19 sacks last year! Either way, I trust Quinn and Whitt to get the defense fixed. Hard to not be happy with the offense so far.

Re: Statement Win! Commanders Victory Post Game Thread
I’m really glad to see this discussion of our d in the context of coaching and player development. True, having an outstanding player like Aaron Donald can have a big impact, but the thinking in the Snyder era was only that, with lousy execution (Forbes)— just fill the d with college all-stars, including “generational” talent Chase Young, and problem solved.
Having a crap GM and crap coaching staff was the problem, and we’re right to believe the new regime will get this sorted out. And it won’t necessarily involve day one draft picks. It’s all about getting solid-enough players who are coached well and communicate well with each other on the field. A bunch of them may already be on the roster. The others will get replaced quickly.
