Redskins Trademark cancelled
U.S. Patent office cancels Redskins trademark registration, says name is disparaging - The Washington Post
Will probably still be years in the courts with appeals and such. So its still not a done deal, but the fight will get more interesting now. |

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Yeah, this is a potential game changer. No way the team or NFL allows an untrademarked team name to exist. Way too much money that could be made without the NFL being able to do a thing about it. Nothing will happen immediately but I wouldn't be surprised to see a name change by 2017 at the latest.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
To me it seems like this isn't worth fighting anymore. Snyder should just change the name and be done with it. We live in such a over sensitive society now. My goodness.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
I tend to agree. I think it's a stupid argument but I'm so sick of hearing about that I'd rather just change it and move on. Nice way for the opposition to win - default.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Does this mean we can go back to calling this site "redskinswarpath.com?"

But giving up the name is giving up so much, for nothing in return. If we knew that the majority of Native Americans were offended and that by dropping the name we were improving people's lives, I could stomach it. But, no... we're dropping the name, and in turn, so much of the team's legacy, just because a few Native Americans are "offended". It makes me sick. |

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
with the understanding that appeals could stretch this out who know's how long - the writing seems to be on the wall here.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Yeah, if this holds up and the Redskins start losing money by the boatload since they no longer have the trademark, I expect a pretty quick resolution to this. It's a damn shame.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
Yea I give this a wait and see approach. Believe I read that this happened before in the 90's but was overturned. Personally I wouldn't want to see the name changed

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
It was fun while it lasted. Onto a new name. No doubt people in DC pressured these fools into doing this.

Re: Redskins Trademark cancelled
My understanding is similar things happened in '92 and '99. If that's the case, isn't there plenty of prior evidence on our side to fight the PTO? Doesn't the PTO have to prove something has changed with these trademarks to make them all of a sudden invalid due to being offensive? It seems as if this is more grandstanding by the PTO rather than anything that will be effective.
In case you couldn't tell, I'm not a lawyer.. If we do end up with a new name, I want us to be something completely different. I no longer want to bring attention to the native american community in any way, shape or form. Being as the D.C. area teams have a way of picking terrible names for teams, I'm worried. Additionally, here is a link to the US PTO's decision: USPTO TTABVUE. Proceeding Number 92046185
