contracts expiring
This year we have ALOT of Redskins whose contracts are ending on top of all the guys we are bound to let go.
According to the salary-cap board the contributors whose contracts are up are... McIntosh Rogers Doughty Brown Golston Grossman Sellers Buchanon Heyer Blades Wilson It doesn't say so on the salary-cap section, but I'm told Moss is also up for a new contract this year. Also there is we do not have the info on guys signed this year like Armstrong, Banks, Torain, Williams and Holliday On top of all this it seems we are inevitably eating the guaranteed contracts of McNabb (3.75 mil), Haynesworth (3 mil), Portis (5.44 mil), Dockery (4 mil), and Kelly (0.316 mil). There might be even more big named cuts of declining injury prone guys such as Carter (10.47 mil-but I'm sure that is like Moss's contract and is not correct), Rabach (4.43 mil), Hicks (2 mil), or Kemoeatu (2.867). In the 6 years I have been a serious Redskins fan I cannot remember a time when we have had to extend so many players. I cannot remember a time when we have had to extend non-starting material players. I have no idea who will be given extensions, or what their terms will be. I forsee the amount of guaranteed money we will be eating limiting who we will be able to sign; especially because the new cba is supposed to not rise as much as we have been accustomed to. Also with our 3rd and 4th picks gone it will be difficult to reload as much as we would like, making it possible that we will extend people we do not desire to. I hope we will be able to keep who we want to keep and have enough room to sign an impact free agent or two. Not knowing how the cba is going to pan out makes predicting things like this difficult, but what do you guys see happening to our players with expiring contracts? I hope we don't let any starters walk, we are thin enough on talent as is, and don't have the means to reload right now. I also hope that our desperation doesn't make us overpay. The offseason is normally when I have the most hope for our team, but I am nervous that this offseason possibly might hinder us more than help us. |

Re: contracts expiring
It might just be my ignorance but I think its a similar situation around the league since last year so many players had one more year added to their contracts due to cba rules. That's why there's such a big fa class. Hopefully bruce allen earns his check and signs all our players and a bunch of young guys from other teams (the non big al types). I could see big changes in every team out there

Re: contracts expiring
Out of your list:
McIntosh Rogers Doughty Brown Golston Grossman Sellers Buchanon Heyer Blades Wilson I'd let them all go. JK. My major keeps Grossman Wilson Buchanon Brown - If we don't pick up a RT but if we do I'd move him to RG. Doughty - on the cheap Roger - on the cheap, otherwise Westbrook impressed as did Buchanon |

Re: contracts expiring
Think you're missing some guys, there's 13-14 guys with expiring contracts. Gotta read the contract details to see who has voidable years after 2010.
Either way, this isn't an unusual amount of spots to have to fill. |

Re: contracts expiring
Portis is a huge chunk of cap. Can his contract be voided? or does it expire this year? Everyone seems to think he wont be back next year, and i thought it had more to do with his lack of ability now than vs. $$$$

Re: contracts expiring
I say its durability and money not ability. Even if he restructured I would not take him back. he's not worth a roster spot to me. He doesn't play special teams which makes him not an ideal backup and if we start him he will break down and we will be left pulling in RB's off the street again. I would rather put a younger healthier RB in his place in the off season when there are more options out there.

Re: contracts expiring
Mike Furrey?! I thought we released him before the season started. Was he on IR or something?
Out of the list, I would not try to retain Chris Wilson.. McIntosh and Blades, I'm on the fence of whether if we should try to resign them or not.. It's obviously they do not fit in our defense, however we will need depth.. I am pretty sure McIntosh doesn't want to be back-up, but I think he might won't have a choice after he tests the market.. Most of players in the list will be good for depth, which is what we need. We cannot expect to fill in both starters and depth through FA and draft. It is possible but I don't think it's ideal, though. |

Re: contracts expiring
I view this as a positive for Shanny. This gives him the ability to either resign or go hunting for his type of guys. I know the latter is pretty hard to do, but if there are guys that he doesn't really want this will help clean up shop without hitting the books at all.

Re: contracts expiring
You can't trade a guy who isn't under contract, so someone like Rocky is probably just going to walk.

Im with you here...add Carter getting cut too. Id like to see us add some new depth at LB and a starter replacing Rocky. Promote Rob Jackson and Jarmon to to outside depth. Move Riley to starter or depth as the successor to Fletch. Alexander as bordline starter/or key depth where he gets 20-25 snaps along with his beast special teams play. Im probably most interested to see how we handle the LB position this offseason...Gotta feeling the front 7 on D is gonna look really different come next season.

Re: contracts expiring
I believe I read that the only player on offense (maybe the team) with guaranteed money in 2011 is Trent Williams. We've got players under contract of course but we can release/trade anyone without any potential cap ramifications. We are looking at potential financial flexibility of $30-$40 million of cap space. It's going to be exciting to see who they get but at the same time frustrating because we're going to have to hear the 'same old Redskins' crap from media and fans alike.
