Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
If we make a change I hope Rex Ryan heads up our defense.
All the 3-4 defense teams have very strong defenses. Maybe that will solve our pass rush problems. |

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
You need to have the right personnel for the 3-4 to be effective and I am not sold we have all the personnel needed to make the switch to the 3-4 and be effective. I hate the idea of a learning curve because you know how that will pan out on the field. Ugly results.

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
our defense as a 3-4 right now would probably be
----------griffen-------montgomery-----daniels/golston------------ --washington-------fletcher--------blades--------rocky/godfrey-- and our current secondary dont know if that d-line would work, and not sure carter could suceed in it, he sure didnt succeed in SF in the 3-4 as a lb and is probably too small to play 3-4 DE. we would need a decent amount of changes in personnel. id think if ryan came we would try to get suggs as a linebacker. id be happy with fletch and blades in the center. is montgomery good enough to play NT? i dont know, possibly. can griffen play DE in a 3-4? who knows. can daniels or golston? dont know. we will bring in new personnel if we change to 3-4

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
From a personnel perspective, how hard is it to change from a 4-3 to a 3-4?
One of the reasons Wade got the head job in Dallas is because they were built to run the 3-4 and Jones thought it would be much easier to find a coach that ran that system than have to overhaul the roster. Interstingly, Gregg Williams is a disciple of Buddy Ryan and Rex is his son, so I'm wondering if that makes the transition any easier as far as terminology. Considering Rex runs the 3-4 (which I didn't know) I'm thinking it will be an entirely different system, terminology and all. Am I way off here? |

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
Vinny is really trying to turn this team into what he remembers of the 49ers.
This is getting worse by the minute. I'm going to turn my attention to the Caps, Wizards and Nationals. |

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
Big C -- no Andre Carter?
Going to a 3-4 is a terrible idea, in my opinion. We don't have an abundance of linebackers, and we dont have large space eating dlinemen. If we go Rex Ryan (which I really doubt we will, giving up picks to get him and the 3-4 is just too much) expect our #1 pick to go to a nose tackle, because without a big nose tackle the 3-4 will not work.

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
I thought that Baltimore made the switch to the 46 defense last year?
After all Rex Ryan is the son of the guy who created the 46. |

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
We would need a "Grady Jackson like" player for nose gaurd. Our linebackers are good enough. Carter can play 3-4 DE.

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
Remember how Joe Gibbs was hired back in 1981 and everyone was like "Oh this guy is all about passing, passing, passing. That's all he knows. Look for 500 yard passing games each week from Theismann"...and then we won going heavy jumbo with the Hogs and John Riggins?
That's all I'm sayin'

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
look no further than the new york jets to see a defense being forced into a 3-4. its a tough transistion. its likely the main reason jonathan vilma wants out of new york.
i do not believe we have any ideal players in our front 7 for this sheme. especially at tackle. all the successful 3-4 defenses have a big, 400 lb monster to play the nose. the outside linebackers must be agile pass rushes. and the inside guys must be run stoppers who can excell in coverage. fletch (inside) and maybe rocky (outside) could make the switch. but how long til rocky's healthy? nobody knows for sure. we had the 4th overall defense this year and now we're gonna overhaul it? i don't see it. and if we do... god help us. |

Re: Rex Ryan 3-4 defense
Big C: Sorry, I was in a rush and didn't say what I meant to there. Basically what I was saying is are you going to sit him down? That's a lot of money to be sitting on your bench. I just don't think from a salary cap perspective it's feasible.
