Plasma vs. LCD

I've been doing some research on Plasma vs. LCD. I'd like to get a 32" Plasma or LCD. Just wondering what some recommended brands/models are.

Is there a huge difference between Plasma and LCD?

I've found a deal that looks pretty good:

Buy.com - Philips USA 32PF7320A Widescreen DCR LCD TV with Pixel Plus - 32PF7320A

Is Phillips junk? Seems to have good reviews overall on Amazon.

I'd love to get hooked up before football season. I don't want to break the bank either, budget of somewhere around $1000 - $1500.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

Plasma TVs have more vibrant colors and sharpness. They also don't suffer from flickering issues (annoying on older models). If that's not an issue for you go with LCD otherwise definitely go with Plasma.

As for Philips, I can't attest to their quality but I can for Panasonic. Their quality is top notch and you really do get a great bang for your buck.

but don't plasmas get messed up really easy? Especially when watching sports and they got the ticker on the bottom like in the final four tourney and the bar above the ticker gets burned into the screen?

It depends on the quality of the TV. If you have an Apex Plasma or Whatever Brand TV, you get what you paid for. There are also instances where screens slip by QA and you have a defective product on your hands. The omen is on you to make sure the TV doesn't have artifacts. If it does return the sucker and try again.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

sadly i won't have that problem in my dorm. I do think my friend is bringing a small LCD though. For football games I am going to come home and watch them in my uncle's 10 person movie theater room, or atleast thats the plan, i think i won't want to make the trip. I watched the redskins cowboys games in there last week and it was amazing.

here is something cool btw Got earphones, but what about eyephones? | News.blog | CNET News.com

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

plasma is better. some LCDs still look bad for fast motion or huge screen sizes, though they're MUCH better than they were 5 years ago. DLP is also good, but make sure you go in and look at the thing before you buy it (old DLPs were WAY too dark).

plasmas do end up dimming after 10 years (less if you watch them a ton), but they have no real drawbacks besides that. philips is a good electronics company and when i visit costco they seem to be fine. for 1500$ you can get a decent 42" too.

summary: I vote plasma

But who wants to replace a $5000 TV after 10 years?

I thought that was the whole appeal of LCD is that they dont flicker, such as with LCD computer screens, they dont flicker so they are better for your eyes

I'm looking at Consumer Reports, and I can tell you that Phillips does not rate very well. Sony dominates the top of their charts in the LCD group, with Sharp and Panasonic also representing themselves very well.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

IF your looking for best overall value I think best bang for the buck right now are LCD projection tv's.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

The lead tech guy here at ESPN was recently asked what he'd buy for his home... he replied that he really liked the Samsung DLP products.
I also hear good things about the Panasonic and Toshiba stuff.

That's what I'm leaning towards at the moment.

I don't think you can go wrong with Panasonic, they seem to be the leader in plasmas right now.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

I was reading that the prices are starting to drop on the larger flat panel displays, so I figure by Christmas time, I may have to reward myself for a good year...

and I think I'll probably opt for LCD over Plasma...but we'll see.

Re: Plasma vs. LCD

Read up on screen resolutions. Alot of plasmas can't display full hi-def.
NFL is shot is 720P. Make sure the set you can buy can properly display it. If you dont, you will get a screen that looks like its chopped off in the corners. I have a friend with a dell plasma 42 inch, you can't even see the score...

My best advice is go to the store and look at the tv's you like. Compare them to other floor models.

oh back on topic: The sony Sony KDS-R60XBR1 Reviews. Projection TVs Reviews by CNET.

looks awesome!!! i dont know if they make a smaller version.
