NFL Says SB Properly Officiated!

"The game was properly officiated, including, as in most NFL games, some tight plays that produced disagreement about the calls made by the officials," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement.

Either we weren't watching the same game, or give me some of what he's smokin'!!!!!

The pass interference call was a good call. Jackson only gained separation with his light shove (with arm extended) at the last instant before the ball arrived. Roethlisburger probably didn't break the plane, on his TD run, but if Pittsburgh had to go for it on 4th down at the 2 inch line, I like their chances with a 240 pound QB on a sneak. The hold on the punt return was borderline, but certainly not a phantom call. The most disappointing call was the holding on Locklear when Stevens caught the pass to the 1-yard line. If you get a chance to see the replay, notice that the pass rusher Locklear was blocking jumped an instant before the snap, and should have been penalized for offsides. The most ridiculous call was Hasselbeck flagged for making a legal tackle after his INT. The fact that nobody from a full crew of officials tried to correct that bogus call is amazing. The ref did get a crucial review correct when Hasselbeck was down by contact on his fumble. Bottom line, Seattle didn't make enough plays to deserve the win. To dominate for the first 20 minutes and only have 3 points to show is the reason they lost the game.

Re: NFL Says SB Properly Officiated!

While my tone might imply that I felt Seattle should have won the game with proper officiating that's not the case. My argument here is simply the NFL has the nerve to say the game was properly officiated and I feel that was the furthest thing from the truth. In fact, I'll stick my neck out here and say that I think this has been the WORST year in recent memory for officiating blunders. I totally disagree with the NFL FO that this game was properly officiated. In my perfect NFL world, team A plays team B and the better team wins. In real life, team A plays team B and the team that plays well enough to overcome bad officiating and their opponent wins. Addressing your points:

1. Jackson and Hope were tangling in the end zone. It could have just as easily been illegal contact on Hope as much as it was PI on Jackson.

2. If Roethlisburger didn't break the plane and score, I still would have appreciated the formality of a 4th down play. Call me anal but I like it when a team earns a score rather than just have it handed to them.

3. The holding call killed a Seattle scoring op and the illegal block/tackle on Hasselbeck gives Pitt another 15 yds. I think the ensuing drive featured the flea flicker TD pass, right? If that's true, a case could be made that the gadget play might not be called without the extra 15 yds of field position from the penalty.

Regardless, Pittsburgh still deserved to win that game given the circumstances, simply because Seattle didn't play well enough to (a) capitalize on the Steelers mistakes and (b) overcome any errant calls from the officiating crew.

Where are these said pics, That Guy, I'd like to see them. Because Cold Pizza today said there was a more than obvious video showing his elbow hitting down before it crossing the plane.

I dont think this affected the game but another unbelivable call was the chop block on Hassleback after the interception. Why would you call that? When do they ever call that? Like that is such a dangerous move but the collar tackle is safe.

I've never seen such a call for blood over a non-Redskin team. Did everyone REALLY want Seattle to win?

Re: NFL Says SB Properly Officiated!

PI was definitely PI

whether he got in or not there's no evidence to overturn it (blah blah blah)... they can't see anything beyond what we have footage of...

call on hasselbeck was bad but not as game-changing as the INT

you know what they (madden) say(s) about holds; they happen every play. don't get the guy in position that makes it even resemble a hold and you're good to go.

all-in-all to me it was a boring ass superbowl. here's the one next next year with the skins beating and afc team!

Again, look at the title of the thread. I don't speak for everyone else who responded, but my gripe isn't with Seattle losing as much as it is with the horrid offciating (which by the way has been going on ALL SEASON LONG) and the NFL FO turning a blind eye. For those people who wish to propagate conspiracy theory, the NFL condoning the performance of the off crew is just more fuel for the fire.

That's what I've been trying to figure out. The calls weren't even that bad. I've seen plenty of worse ones.

Yeah I don't get it either. The bad calls don't make up for the fact that Seattle simply didn't play well enough to win the game.

Turnovers, penalties, poor clock mgmt, dropped passes, etc., are what Seattle fans should really be upset over, and what the rest of us should be pointing to as the main reasons why they lost the game.

Re: NFL Says SB Properly Officiated!

it's been gaining momentum, bad call after bad call all year long and the nfl acts like all is well.and i can gaurantee that if it had been the skins instead of the seahawks you guys would be quite irate.if it's bad for them then it will be bad for all.

Skins fan 44, I am with you on the whole "horse collar" thing. The rules committee or where ever this thing is discussed , really need to better define what a horse collar IS and IS NOT. I think I saw a lot of it last year and it was never called. It seems like a new way to tackle that I dont' ever remember seeing that much in the past. It seems like every defender who gets beat these days goes for the back of the shoulder pads on a tackle from behind. I think the Skins were really lucky a lot last year that Portis did not miss significant time due to injury from several horse collars that brought him down last year. It is an injury waiting to happen!

Re: NFL Says SB Properly Officiated!

The fact that the NFL says the game was "properly officiated" doesn't bode well for the future. The NFL simply doesn't care enough if the officiating is bad. If they did, the refs would be hired full time and be in shape and able to see. Nfl is the only sport that doesn't hire full time refs. Golly, could it be a "money issue".????
