Re: All things Science related. λν = c
btw, the problem with the turning tests is basically the "good" bots just kinda repeat what you say and aren't really intelligent at all. we've proven time and again that making computers insanely good at specific tasks is pretty trivial if you've got cash and man hours to throw at it (Deep blue, the jeopardy thing, turning tests etc).
as far as that article - reaperbot has been around since quake 1 and has been amazingly good since 1997. the guy got hired by epic (unreal team) and has pretty much perfected shooter AI bots. it finds all the powerups and ranks importance, then runs around between them with nearly perfect spawn timing. to make it more "human" all you need to do is insert randomness in movement and aim. the thing already mapped levels on the fly, assigned waypoints to item spawns and used a "sound" variable to determine targets/target locations (Can i hear a gun around the corner? i should aim at the opening and wait a couple seconds). bot AI really hasn't jumped that massively since late 96/early 97 in all honesty. |

Speaking of intelligent life:
Slime Something scientists have come to understand is that slime molds are much smarter than they look. One species in particular, the SpongeBob SquarePants–yellow Physarum polycephalum, can solve mazes, mimic the layout of man-made transportation networks and choose the healthiest food from a diverse menu—and all this without a brain or nervous system. “Slime molds are redefining what you need to have to qualify as intelligent,” Reid says. |

More awesome:
Brain-damaged man 'aware' of scientists' questions | Science | guardian.co.uk A crash victim thought to have been in a vegetative state for more than a decade has used the power of thought to tell scientists he is not in pain. Canadian Scott Routley, from London, Ontario, communicated with researchers via a brain scan, proving that he is conscious and aware. It is the first time such a severely brain-damaged patient has been able to provide clinically relevant information to doctors. British neuroscientist Professor Adrian Owen, who leads the research team at the Brain and Mind Institute of Western Ontario, said: "Scott has been able to show he has a conscious, thinking mind. We have scanned him several times and his pattern of brain activity shows he is clearly choosing to answer our questions. We believe he knows who and where he is." |
