SM may be paying a guy that has the know how (2 pro bowls) but lacks the physical tools to mentor a draft pick.

He may not be at top form but is still a huge upgrade from what we have/had going into the season.

I trust SM.

I do like the other moves SM has made, just not this one.
The problem is you are taking Cerrato moves and equating that to the player. Tampa Bay went full Vinny in FA. Just signing the big name regardless of whether they fit the system. When your system turns Revis into an average CB, Im ok with questioning the system.

The cost of switching a 6th for a 7th a year down the road is next to nothing. No guaranteed money means we can walk away from the contract real easy. Lets say Goldson is flat out terrible, how is that any different than the last few years out of the secondary? It also allows us to do something that you are calling for. For us to develop a younger player. The finishing to developing a player requires him to play, but that doesnt mean that the development cant start with him on the bench. I would even go so far as to say that a lot of players never develop when they are thrown into the fire and fail early on in their career. Some can come back from that, a lot cant. IMO, failure as a rookie can derail some players development.

I kinda find it hard to believe at 30 the guy is washed up. Seems that he was just a bad fit scheme wise in Tampa. It happens.

Not only do I think we get a pass rusher with the first pick, but I we also draft a ilb(mlb) to give strong competition to Riley. Where there is really limited safety options this draft, the inside linebacker position has some strong 2nd round-5th prospects. There is another linebacker at Clemson not named beasly who is a solid player..name escapes me but he projects as ILB, seems really talented

Should the Redskins have been more patient in getting Goldson? | Rich Tandler's Real Redskins

...Compare what the Redskins are paying Goldson to the one-year, $2 million deal that Tyvon Branch signed with the Chiefs or the one-year, $2.25 million contract Louis Delmas got to stay with the Chiefs. For that matter, Rahim Moore, the second-ranked free agent safety this offseason, got a three-year deal averaging $4 million per year.

On the open market, Goldson would have been offered a deal much closer to what Branch and Delmas got. All the Redskins had to do was wait for the Bucs to cut him...
Love the deal, but points have been made whether even $4million was overpaying him given $2 million deals handed out for midling safeties this offseason. Regardless, I don't care, I'm hoping he does well & revives his careeor for a few years while we draft a replacement. Also I think on our team, we couldn't afford to lose out to another team again and have no options left at safety..

I couldn't say "down" because we have nobody else and I suppose there is a chance that he'll help us, so I said "up" with little enthusiasm.

I agree. They have very little depth behind him, so its very likely we get a draft pick or UDFA there.

None of the guys Tandler mentions have a first team All Pro honor in their trophy case. Stupid concern.

After the TB debacle and the fact that he signed a 1 year like Knighton, I can see Goldson being hungry and try to prove himself.

Re: Redskins trade for Free Safety Dashon Goldson

Another thing people are forgetting is the fact that we have a new Defensive coordinator.

I'm with the rest of you, I want to see our defense improved (obviously) but we have NO idea how these players are going to mesh and play together when we don't even fully know what our defense is going to look like.

At this point, all we can do is wait and have faith in our team. With Scot Mc running things around here i have more faith than previous years.

Lets save the complaining for AFTER the season.

Everyone needs to cheer up! It's the off season and we're definitely getting better. That's all I wanted.

Just to point out, Goldson didnt sign a 1 year contract. He still has 3 years remaining on his existing contract. This year he has a 4 mil cap hit since TB ate the 4 mil left in guaranteed money. The next 2 years, the cap hit is in the 7 to 8 mil range. However, he has no guaranteed money left in his contract, so we can cut him with nothing against the cap (unless we cut him after he earns his workout bonus).

He should have incentive to gain those last two years of his contract though. If he doesnt play well and gets cut next offseason, he will not be signing for much at all imo.

Good point also a good reason to trade and not wait till he is cut.

Linebacker Stephone Anthony and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett will be joining Beasley as top-100 draft choices from Clemson defense.
