I was surprised too when i read it that's why it stuck in my memeory, i watched a few of Beck's college games and he played in a QB friendly pass offense at BYU where he didn't often fire the ball in there and i figured he didn't have a strong arm but it was a bias i developed based on the scheme that turned out to be false:

I was gonna post this w/ my earlier post but got caught up at work/practice.

MAXIMIZING MOTION
BY JENNY VRENTAS
AND ANDRE MALOK

When quarterbacks do their position drills at the
NFL Combine, team scouts and personnel
are eager for a live look at how they
throw the football. Quarterbacks are
taken through a battery of drills that
assess attributes such as their grip on
the ball and their footwork.
They are also clocked with a radar
gun to measure the velocity with
which they throw on an out
route. Basic physics can
show us how velocity
translates to the
football field, using
the 20-yard out as a benchmark for a
quarterback’s pro-readiness.
At the 2008 NFL Combine, Ravens first-round
pick and TEST client Joe Flacco — who had a
meteoric rise up the draft boards last spring —
set the mark for throwing velocity at 58 mph.
“He separated himself from just about
everybody by the velocity of the ball,”
said
Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, “though it’s really one
factor in the whole process.”
The flight of a football can be calculated using
equations for projectile motion, if air drag is
neglected.

Not exited about this move, because he is 29.

Damn, now I want to know what Colt's ball speed was (and JC's too, for that matter). Great post, 30gut.

Flacco's passes really have some zip on them compared to our 2009 QBs though. Caught a couple Ravens games.

The bottom line is this...who is a better long term prospect Beck or Colt?. I'd say that's about even. So why make this deal?
Does anyone know if this is about practice squad eligibility or something?
Otherwise, this makes little sense...other than the skins doing a favor for Doug Dutch and letting Colt go early to give him a chance elsewhere.

Doesn't have an NFL arm? Just to clarify a bit.

Go to Youtube and search John Beck 70 Yards.

This is a common misconception that Beck has lived with since ending his career with BYU. The guy has a rocket arm. In fact, in the Combine in 2007 he had the 2nd strongest arm in throwing. How that is not NFL-ready has always been beyond me.

He is 29, that is correct. Or will be shortly.

However, he is 29 of unused potential, rather than 29 and having been beat up in the NFL for a number of years. Most 29 year old QB's in the NFL have more wear and tear on them at this point. Not so with Beck.

I wouldn't be too concerned about what you've got here. When I have more time, I'll give you a Beck Fan's perspective, after having watched every game he played in in college, and throughout his NFL career (which could have been much better).

Obviously you are a Beck fan, given that you joined a Redskins board one day after he joined the team.

This one? The ball only traveled 64 yards in the air though.

just watched a few spots on Beck.. I think from being in such a slinging atmosphere he never really learned how to make proper reads/look defenders off

Most BYU QBs are not sucessful in the NFL. Steve Young was the big exception.

McMahon was, but he wasn't really that great of a QB, just on great teams.

Ty Detmer, Steve Sarkisian, Robbie Bosco...all flops after BYU. They just run a system that works incredibly against college defenses, but it doesn't transition well to the NFL.

They're a lot like Florida Gator QBs and their transition to the NFL.
