Redskins Mailbag:

Question: Gary, do you know of any issues at this point with signing any of the Redskins’ draft picks to contracts, especially Trent Williams?

-- Matt S.

Gary: Most rookie contracts, particularly those for first-round picks, are finalized in the two weeks prior to training camp. So there’s plenty of time for the Redskins to get a rookie contract done with each of their six draft picks. Meantime, rookies are expected to participate in OTAs and the June mini-camp, so they are staying connected to the team’s plans.

Most of our rookies are finishing the school semester out. They have to finish school is what I'm hearing and what was written elsewhere on Redskins.com.

Excellent, can we get offset language to let Nike pay him while he plays with us?

Redskins Insider - Shanahan says Westbrook is still in the mix
Quote:
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday that free agent running back Brian Westbrook has not determined where he will play, although Washington remains a possibility. It could help the Redskins that brother Byron Westbrook plays for Washington.

"I'm trying to talk to his brother a little bit, trying to get in good with him," Shanahan said. "I'm not sure it's helped a whole lot, but I'll keep on trying."

Shanahan added that Westbrook provides a specific value on third downs with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and block.

Shanahan also was supportive of the entire running back corps when asked about Larry Johnson's progress.

"We have some healthy competition," Shanahan said. "We have some guys with a lot of ability. I'm looking forward to when the pads are on, show us what they can do in game situations."

The Redskins completed another week of organized team activities (OTAs), again without the services of defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Safety LaRon Landry, linebacker Andre Carter and punter Josh Bidwell also missed practice Wednesday with excused absences.

"Every once in a while there's going to be guys who are excused or [have] a problem," Coach Mike Shanahan said. "I won't get into all the scenarios, but that's typical of OTA days. And hopefully we don't have too many of those."

Shanahan also said it would take "some time" to build a rapport with quarterback Donovan McNabb similar to the one McNabb had with Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid. But Shanahan said he is looking forward to spending time with McNabb during the off-season.

"I love the way he's handling himself thus far," Shanahan said. "I know he's enthused, ready to go, and I look forward to continue to work with him."

Shanahan said he's satisfied with the depth of the defensive line after the Redskins bolstered the position during the offseason. He praised veteran lineman Vonnie Holliday, whose career Shanahan has followed. Shanahan said Holliday is "pretty impressive as a person" and "fits in" with the Redskins' schemes.

The smallest player on the field, wide receiver Brandon Banks, has caught Shanahan's attention. At 5 feet 7 and 150 pounds, Banks is dwarfed by his teammates, but Shanahan complimented his return skills.

"Obviously not very big, but very fast," Shanahan said. "We ran him in the 40, and he broke 4.4 when he ran, and he's catching the ball...as a wide receiver. So, he's competing right now, and we'll let time take care of itself and give him the opportunity in the preseason games to show what he can do."

Shanahan did not elaborate on a New York Post report that a Brooklyn stripper, Silvia Mena, is suing Haynesworth for $10 million, claiming that she's carrying his child but is receiving no financial support from him.

"We're going to talk about the people that are here," Shanahan said. "Of the situation you're talking about, I think it would be inappropriate of me to make a comment on something like that when I don't have the facts."

Tight end Chris Cooley was holding kicks on Wednesday in Bidwell's absence. "It's probably the first time I've ever been around Chris when he looked a little nervous, something he's not comfortable with," Shanahan said. "I'm not sure he's ever done it before. But Chris has got excellent hands. We wanted to take a look in our OTAs to see if he could, how he handled the ball obviously as a holder, and I thought he did a good job."

Shanahan said he hopes FedEx Field can host a Super Bowl, now that New York/New Jersey has been awarded the 2014 game. Shanahan said he does not think it is a major factor if a Super Bowl is played in bad weather because both teams deal with the same conditions. "It does open an opportunity for possibly us getting a Super Bowl in the future," Shanahan said.

The Redskins return to OTAs Tuesday. Their next OTA open to reporters is Wednesday.

Interesting points bolded.

Shanahan knows how to use the media to persuade free agents, I like it.

Maake Kemoeatu trying to get down to 345 pounds

Redskins nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu said he is "at 90 percent" in his recovery from a torn right Achillies' tendon, but his biggest concern is getting down to his listed playing weight of about 345 pounds. Kemoeatu said he needs to drop 15 to 20 pounds.

"The faster I can get my weight down, the faster I can recover," Kemoeatu said Wednesday at an organized team activity at Redskins Park, adding: "That's where I was playing at my best at Baltimore, playing at that weight. I've played at 380; playing at 340 is a lot different."

Kemoeatu, who suffered the Achillies' injury in August 2009, has started pushing a sled and said he felt confident about being back to full speed by training camp in July. If he's healthy, he could be a key ingredient in the team's conversion to a 3-4 defense, especially considering Albert Haynesworth's reluctance to play nose tackle.

"He is a prototypical nose tackle," Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said of Kemoeatu. "He's working extremely hard. I think next week, he'll
get more reps. The key is getting ready for summer camp. And there's
not a question he's full speed, ready to go."

When the Redskins signed Kemoeatu in March, it amounted to a vote of
confidence in the former Charlotte Panther, who missed the 2009 season with the achilles injury. Kemoeatu said he has used that as motivation to work harder.

"That says a lot for the organization having a lot of faith in me," Kemoeatu. "They signed me while I was still injured, so I feel like I've got something to prove."

Kemoeatu is among the biggest bodies on the roster. Shanahan joked that he
definitely has the biggest head, which requires a Size 13 helmet. The
biggest helmet Shanahan previously noticed was 8 ½.

Aside from his recovery, Kemoeatu's standing on the team is intriguing because of the great, unseen presence at Redskins Park this off-season: Haynesworth, who on Wednesday was reportedly sued for $10 million by a New York exotic dancer who claims he impregnated her but is not providing financial support. Haynesworth, who has been absent from minicamps and OTAs, is frustrated about plans to use him as a nose tackle in Washington's 3-4 defense.

Kemoeatu has a much different attitude. He learned to play the position in Baltimore from 2002 to 2005 under Rex Ryan, the former Ravens' defensive coordinator, and
Tony Siragusa, the former nose tackle. Kemoeatu said Wednesday that he was working to earn the starting role with the Redskins.

"They got me to where I'm having fun playing" tthe position, he said. "I don't have to be the guy getting all the sacks all the time and getting all the tackles. As long as our team is winning, and our goal is to go win that Super Bowl."

I really like that guy. We need a bunch of Zos on our team. He is a beast and about the most versitile player in the NFL. If he makes the starting roste as a ILB and plays very well guys will finally know who he is. As fans we have all seen his talents all over the field it would be great for Zo to get national recognition by having a great year.

Are there other players on other teams who play OL, DL, LB and I am pretty sure I have seen him at FB and TE as well?

That is versitile if you ask me! LOL
