He left a little bitter but I imagine now he sees why he was cut.. Nobody was taking that chance

Re: Alex Smith Cut

While this was inevitable, I think he was holding out hope of playing again. I just don't think he got the offers that would have made it worthwhile. Moving his family across the country for probably a 1 year deal and already getting paid by WFT anyway probably made little sense in the cold light of day. For me he's the kind of guy the NFL wants so I hope he takes up coaching. But I could equally see him go into politics. Who wouldn't vote for him if he has a good platform?

Happy retirement AS.

If you're talking about the GQ article I never got the impression he was bitter, he even clarified that and said he had no animosity towards the team.

Reactions to that article got things a little twisted I think.

Would be nice and mend some fences if he would have said that though.

Link to confirm since I didn't see one.

It was the right decision. I was hoping he's stick on as the backup one more year but the team does need to consider its future.

Jacksonville was his only hope and Coach Meyer said he has serious concerns about Alex's medical status, so a playoff run and hanging it up after the greatest comeback story every...that's a fine way to go out.

My daughter can still wear her Smith jersey with pride and won't have to see him on another team.

Thanks for the memories and inspiration, Alex. We're a lucky fanbase to have gone through this story with you.

I wonder what he's going to do now. Not that he has to do anything. I'd chill.

But given his track record, I don't see him sitting still for very long. I wonder if he'll try to stay close to the game -- coaching, front office, or broadcasting ....

Anyway -- a good dude. He represented us well. Glad he wore the burgundy and gold.

Re: Alex Smith Cut (update: retired)

Kudos to Smith for the great comeback.. Unfortunately it sounds like he still hasn't fully recovered yet so I'm not surprised that there are no teams that would sign him as a starter. At least Smith and the world know that he was able to overcome one of the most difficult things in life.

I wonder if Smith would be interested in a coaching position in near future.

He might not understand it right now but it's for the best. Best of luck to him in his next path.

Re: Alex Smith Cut (update: retired)

I came back here for today to wish Alex Smith the best.

I think he knew the writing was on the wall at the end of last season when his calf couldn't get better. He was "banged up" after only playing a few games and I think it was clear that he was reaching the limits of what he was physically capable of with an injury like he had.

But his comeback is an all time amazing inspirational story. I hope to see him around the NFL in some capacity. He brings a lot to any football program.

I still think he would have continued playing, or at least tried to, if someone had gave him the opportunity to start, but it was clear that wasn't going to happen. And to be honest every time he got hit, I was afraid to watch. I'm sure the NFL teams felt the same way. Now he can live a healthy and happy life and be there for his kids and family, which is all he said he wanted to accomplish out of the "comeback", knowing if he could do it again, which he said on the Alex Smith Project documentary last year.

Best wishes Alex, thank you for everything!

Re: Alex Smith Cut (update: retired)

What are we gonna do at qb now.

I keed I keed.

I never thought he would play another down after that injury..he came back and showed the world a level of perseverance, and stick to it-ness that us mere mortals can't understand.
It was very evident, though (and understandably so) he was a shell of his former self. I shattered my femur into 15 or so pieces when I was younger...and just learning to walk again and putting weight on it took a ton of faith. To suffer his injury and play at a professio nal level....just whoa. We all look at the physical part of it.....but the mental wherewithal to get back on the field after that gruesome injury is beyond what most people can comprehend. I remember walking into a pool hall after my injury and just being worried about tripping on a step.....
Holy shit....Alex Smith is an animal...
Enjoy retirement buddy. You deserve it
