Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
The man is a player that will be able to provide depth at DE and NT and be used acrossed the D-Line. We needed GOOD depth at both badly. Plus he is still only 27 years old. Im glad he is on our side, and not going against twice a year. Plus he sounds like a team player. We are building a team full of good guys and guys that I will be proud to call Redskins. If we can get another 6th rounder from Haynesworth from an AFC team I would be pumped. Skins are on the right path. Hail!!!

Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
Versatility as everyone has said. I think our defense in general will be giving a lot of different "looks" to opposing QB.
Landry in the box, Rak coming off the edge, Rak rushing from a standing position. I think we're going to do it all this year. I also like the fact the Cofield gets to stay in the East. He's familiar with Philly, Dallas, and obvi the Giants' offense. So that's a huge plus, especially as the division tightens up down the stretch, which we know it will. I think Shanny is basically saying to Haynesworth, if you're gonna stay you're gonna have to compete your way onto the field. No head games, just bust your ass and earn it. |

While the 3-4 defense does a good job at confusing offense, fundamentally a team needs to have a solid NT that can take on blockers and push the the center, and DEs to control the running backs and keep blockers from the rushing OLBs. I think in Carriker and Cofield, we'll have two solid DEs for the defense. Cullen Jenkins could probably play better NT than Cofield, an given his experience on a 3-4 defense would be helpful.

Re: Report: Redskins Agree to Terms with Barry Cofield
This is a signing with some upside, and I would have been ecstatic under similar conditions just two years ago. But if you take Barry Cofield and if you plug and play in our current defensive philosophy (or even an adjusted philosophy run by the same people), you're going to get a guy who isn't anything near worth what we paid to get him.
Basically, the people who knew Cofield best opted not to make an offer remotely competitive to ours. Which is not to say that we, who know him quite well from playing him for five years, don't have a plan for bringing him in, but if we know anything about our team's plans on the defensive side of the ball, it's that most gambles typically just don't work.

Giants didn't let Barry Cofield leave without a fight, agent says | NJ.com
As for the move to a 3-4 defense, McCartney indicated it wasn't anything that scared Cofield. "The thing about Barry is he played (nose tackle) in college and he's a big-body guy, so he's one of the few interior guys who can go either inside or outside. He has some versatility," said McCartney, a former director of personnel for the Eagles. "The one thing he hasn't had a chance to do a lot of is get up the field, and I think the Redskins' coaches did a good job of saying, 'We're going to utilize you in a variety of ways.'" |

My personal preference is a mix of the two. Cofield can excel as a 3-4 DE, and while he may do well as a 3-4 NT, personally I think it'd be a bit of a waste. The discussion is first and foremost on how players fit into scheme, and some fans like me hoping that the team uses new acquisitions to the best of their ability. Let's look at the Ravens, Ngata is a beast and can play at any position along the d-line. But he's not their NT, they play him mostly at DE. They had Kelly Gregg as their NT, and then they drafted T. Cody to be their NT of the future. That to me is using your player to the best of their ability. The reason people will continue to bring Haynesworth is because they want to b*tch about him.

Our run defense has vastly improved with Cofield.

The thing is the Giants are a team that puts a lot of importance in their front 7. More than we do. This guy played well for them. He's going to be a good player for us.
