Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
The Redskins don't officially retire numbers. He will go in the ring of fame and the number will go out of circulation forever. Maybe in light of these circumstances they will change the procedure but either way other then CP we will never see another #21 on the Redskins.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I thought I heard CP would be switching to #21 for good, not just for this game.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
Are you sure that Gibbs and Co. will allow portis to switch his # so soon?

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I would be in favor of that. CP was his bud and it would be a great way to honor him in addition to giving us fans a way to continually honor ST as well.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I hope it's just for one game or the rest of the season. I'd still like the number #21 retired along with the #9 and #44 as well.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I'd like to find out if this is confirmed. No word from anyone but Chick Hernandez at this point if I'm correct, and that might be him interpreting CP's desire to do this, not the fact that it's going to happen.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I'm a little skeptical, I've heard nothing new about this since the initial report by Chick Hernandez yesterday...maybe Portis knee jerked and told Chick that he was going to do that and then changed his mind or had the idea nixed by Gibbs...
If he did switch numbers though it wouldn't bother me...

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
Me too. When this specific question was asked at the Dan Snyder / Joe Gibbs press conf. yesterday, they did not specifically answer the reporter. They only referred to the plan of having the #21 sicker on the helmets (NFL wide) and a patch on the Redskin jerseys. So, still no actual confirmation that I can find.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
I personally think that everyone is very wise not to acknowledge it. If no one talks about it then Goodell can't step in and forbid it, threaten to keep cp out of the game, etc. It's like I learned a long time ago in the navy: It's a hell of a lot easier to ask forgiveness than to get permission.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
Why does anyone think Goodell would stop it? It isn't against any rule I have ever heard of. I know in the past players have switched numbers mid year for whatever reason.

Re: Clinton Portis to switch to #21
This is in JLC's blog:
"Also, several people have asked me about Portis changing his number to 21, and I have heard rumblings about it as well. To this point the team has said nothing official about it and I contacted the NFL as well and was told they have received nothing formal on this prospect. I asked them to check again if possible and make certain there is not a possibility that Clinton will wear Sean's number, and I await their response."

I really don't see what the big deal would be either.
