Re: Shawn Springs to have surgery

ESPN.com - NFL - Redskins CB Springs out 3-4 weeks after surgery

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins starting cornerback Shawn Springs underwent surgery to repair a minor abdominal muscle tear on Tuesday and will be sidelined three to four weeks.

The procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers at Durham Regional Hospital.

The Redskins hope that Springs will be able to return for the regular season opener on Sept. 11 against Minnesota.

Washington acquired cornerback Mike Rumph from the San Francisco 49ers on Monday for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs.

Springs, 31, was signed as a free agent by Washington in March 2004 after cornerback Champ Bailey was traded to Denver for running back Clinton Portis.

A first-round pick in 1997, Springs played his first seven seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Well, at least we have a month to develop a CB. ANd we'll be watching the camp cuts, no doubt. Hope he gets back for opening night!!!

I saw that too and was going to post the link until I read this...

I figure that is why they consider it abdominal surgery.

Re: Shawn Springs to have surgery

not good not good not good...

key injuries thus far-

Portis
Clemons
Springs

Our corner depth is a real concern. Does Patten have any trade value?

Brunell will be on that list soon I'm sure of it.

....and the hits just keep on coming. Hopefully he is ready for Week 1 or at least week 2.

Well, again, I'm going back to depth we had before the draft. At that time, Clemons was healthy.

To me, our linebacker situation, even after losing Arrington was more than solid with Marcus Washington, Lemar Marshall, and Clemons. Now that Clemons is out, there's still Warrick Holdman - who, according to coaches has new found focus and determination to atone for last year, Khary Campbell who's been a veteran for this team for 4 seasons, and the project, Robert McCune.

With Springs' history of injuries, and with Gregg Williams dependence on capable defensive backs, I thought it would have been a better idea to go after Springs' eventual replacement in the draft. Oh well.

There's no such thing as non-serious surgery. Even knowing that it was done right away, this has been a recurring problem with him. What kind of after-effects will he suffer from? Will he be the same cornerback when he comes back?

At least our players are getting hurt while playing the game. Did anyone else see the clip of DeAngelo Hall hurting his hand?
He got into a slap fight at pratice with a rookie. They both had helmets on! Hall had to miss the afternoon practice and had his hand injured.

And at least it's still really early. If it was the 4th week of preseason I would be shating in my pants.
We can get healthy in time for the opener. That's all that really matters. This is football. Players get hurt. As long as the O-Line is healthy I'll take are chances.

Re: Shawn Springs to have surgery

I think we should explore Patten in a trade for a an extra CB. Its not too late to invest now and be prepared down the stretch.

Re: Shawn Springs to have surgery

Springs won't be playing for us forever. This allows our younger guys to get more experience practising with the first team. It would be nice to have him back for the start of the season but I'd rather him be ready to go from November thru XLI.

Re: Shawn Springs to have surgery

ugh this is not good, cuz like its been said ad infinitum, Springs is the real key to this defense. all those creative blitzes Williams throws won't work if the opponent WR has that first step on the corner.

why did we get rid of Walt Harris last year? Garnell Wilds? the CB situation is bad right now, even if Springs gets back in time for the opener. he's older and its a bit harder for him to recover. week 1 would definitely be rushing him, and a nagging injury all year long to an older CB equals disaster.

whoever said it was right, not addressing cornerback last season was a BIG misstep.

Walt Harris got beat for the touchdown throw in Tampa Bay last year, one of the many factors in that loss. He was a favorite whipping boy around here, and probably deserved it. He was a good tackler, but on deep coverage, you found yourself holding your breath if the ball was thrown in his direction. We'd likely be no better with him still on the team. Garnell Wilds was unproven, and again, I don't know how much we could've depended on him either.

I maintain that a cornerback as the heir apparent to Shawn Springs was a bigger need than linebacker.
