Good point. This is just overkill. There's not going to be enough balls to go around to all these guys. Not one pick for either line? Come on.

These guys aren't selected solely for their one-on-one pass catching abilities. It's a big-picture strategy. This draft maximizes Zorn's WCO potential. It increases the decisions defenses will have to make.

Both WRs we selected were the top rated players left on the board when we selected them, so I don't have a problem with those - they ensure Jason Campbell's very bright future IMO. That said, I did not like the Fred Davis pick. We just gave Cooley a long term deal and Calais Campbell could have filled a need on the DL. ARI selected Calais between our Davis and Kelly picks. We've done nothing to address depth in the trenches. That should be our top priority tomorrow.

JC is certainly going to have weapons next year. The message I'm getting is clear, this offense is open for business.

Thrash and Mix are done but I think we will keep Mathis for KR and Depth

We'll see. Only time will tell. They watched the tape, Campbell's college coach is on the staff, so you have to trust their judgment at this point. Certainly you have to trust them over internet mock drafts ... Fred Davis seems like a luxury pick, but he did have tremendous production at the college level last season (881 yards) and won the Mackey Award. Pittsburgh did have success with Spaeth (Mackey award winner) and Miller (Mackey award winner) running two TE sets last season. I guess he was the top player on their board and they didn't like some of the other defensive players on the board at that time. I'm very surprised they didn't go DE at 48 though. Not quite ready to write off the FO just yet ... all these guys had tremendous production at the college level in big time programs.

Or perhaps he had glowing things to say about Campbell and they just didn't listen to him?

Maybe, I'm assuming if he was really going to the mat for the guy it would have made a difference. Maybe not. I'd just assume that if they liked what they saw on tape, and his old coach was vouching for him, that they would have gone that direction over a second pass catching TE. Just seems to make more sense to me that there was something they didn't like about him rather than Snyder and Cerrato just said 'screw you we want a TE sucker!' Maybe not. Impossible to know, I'm just saying what strikes me as more plausible.

I would have thought they'd at least take a blocking TE

That's what I was thinking. Neither Cooley nor Davis is a natural blocker. We'll see, we'll see.

Trying to make sense out of it all is to use Cooley in the slot or out wide and have Davis lined up tight. Davis should be considered a better blocker than Cooley. Now saying that Cooley will take on more of a wR role makes one wonder why draft two more WRs. Teams aren't going to trade for one of them. They'll wait until we'll have to cut one and get them as a FA.

Neither is going to get cut (or else you really can blast the FO). Moss and ARE are really the only guys that are assured of being on the team. Caldwell, McCardell are gone; and beyond that you are looking at Thrash, Mix, and Mathis. Not exactly world beaters. You're going to carry 5-6 WRs so Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, and a couple of other special team performers. I don't know that it is total overkill at WR because they really didn't have any depth or size at that position and now they do. Plus, it takes time for WRs to develop typically.

Yeah, but you generally don't need your 3rd, 4th, and 5th wideouts to be "world beaters". I'm on record that this means more to Moss and Randle El than people think.

I think Zorn was completely dissatisfied with his current options at wide receiver.
