400 yards in a game doesn't mean diddly squat if you throw 3 Ints.

It sure as hell does if your a rookie going against a top 5 defense who are the SB champs, and everyone said you couldnt sling it coming out of the draft haha. Rookies throw pics, there correctable.

Yards don't matter if you have 3 picks.

Thats true most of the time. But in cam newtons case, they do. Ppl thought he couldnt even throw the ball nevermind carve up a defense as good as GB. He may have some lapses in judgement that led to 3 int, but one was a tipped ball as well. Regardless the guy threw for 400 plus yards 2 weeks in a row on a team that was the worst team in the nfl last year. Give props when there due. Dont be that guy.

It does matter if you are a rookie.

All rookies with throw interceptions, even Peyton Manning. But other rookies don't throw for 400 yards on back-to-back weeks.

Re: Mad props to Cam Newton

3 picks when throwing for 400 yards is definitely not a good sign, but throwing for 400 yards two weeks in a row (and the 2nd week against a good defense like GB's) shows that he has at minimum a basic understanding of how to read defense and find open receivers. So in effect it's showing that he's definitely ahead of where we expected him to be right now.

Now the 3 interceptions show he still makes bad decisions, even though 1 of those was apparently a receivers' fault (going from the earlier post in this thread). But the int's are correctable, and should be fixed as he improves. At the minimum he is showing the talent that made him worthy of being taken #1 overall. Look at how he plays now and then think about where he'll be in 3 years with a better understanding of the system and more talent around him.

Long story short, Cam Newton is not who we thought he was. I figured he'd be slightly better, if not just as bad, as Jimmy Clausen was last year, but he's quickly erased that misconception. He's shown that he has the talent worthy of being considered a playmaker down the road.

Re: Mad props to Cam Newton

i was out at a sports bar today and was watching newton. yeah he made some terrible reads, threw into double coverage a few times, but so did grossman and he's been in the league a hell of a lot longer. it's his first two games in the nfl in a pro style offense and he's had back to back 400+ games. has any other rookie in the history of the nfl done this? hell no. and it's not like he's throwing to the posse. most experts were predicting that he was going to fall on his face. i thought he was going to fall on his face. the guy is the real deal. end of discussion.

Especially when you lose.....CAR 0 - 2. As I said last week, let's not annoint Newton yet. CAR was only 11 runs / 18yds, outside of Newton. Newton was also sacked 4 times. You cannot rely on one guy and if CAR continues to do that, Newton will likely not last the season.

Re: Mad props to Cam Newton

has a player ever thrown for 400 yards his first 2 starts in the NFL? (and one against the ex superbowl champs?) I think not. Guy is good. Imagine if he had a good defense and more than one capable receiver, guy would kill it. I hate to say it, but imagine if he was here along with all of our young talent and Kyle Shanahan. We would have something very very special.

Needless to say, i am very surprised that he is rocking it like this. I hope he keeps it up.

Ditto! This is what I think of him.

Fair enough. I should give the guy some credit, but I don't want to crown him just yet.

I also take the 300-400 yard games with a grain of salt, since everyone is putting them up. I have heard some interesting theories about how a lockout could actually help offenses. Limited contact practices were a by-product, which hurts defenses due to minimal full contact reps. Not saying that is a fact, but interesting theory.
