Redskin Insider:
Posted at 4:36 PM ET, 08/15/2010 Redskins remain interested in Brian Westbrook The Redskins have been through their first preseason game and got a good look at young running backs Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams. But Coach Mike Shanahan said after Sunday's practice that the club remains interested in veteran free agent Brian Westbrook. "Like I told you, I'm not sure what direction he's going," Shanahan said. "But we've been entertaining that option. I'm not sure what direction he's going at this time." Shanahan said there is no timetable for action. ESPN's John Clayton suggested late last week that Westbrook was likely headed to St. Louis by Monday, a claim the Rams denied. St. Louis, though, is one team that has remained interested in pursuing the former Philadelphia Eagle throughout his free agency. Denver, another potential suitor because of a backfield decimated by injuries, last week signed veteran Justin Fargas. The Redskins rushed for 140 yards on 41 carries in Friday night's 42-17 preseason victory over Buffalo. Torain (17 carries, 62 yards) and Williams (11 carries, 51 yards, two touchdowns) got the bulk of the work. Veteran Larry Johnson is scheduled to get his chance this Saturday against Baltimore, with fellow veteran free agent signee Willie Parker playing more the following week against the New York Jets.

I just don't know why we would want Westbrook at this point. Torain and Williams seem perfectly capable and would give us the opportunity to get younger at the position while gaining valuable experience.
The only way I could see signing him would be if one of the other veterans craps out. |

It's possible that it is just a plot to make everyone work harder and stay on edge. If Shannahan makes everyone believe that he is still interested in Westbrook then they don't feel safe.
Honestly the only thing to gain with Westbrook is a 3rd down back but I'm sure that the other guys (Torrain and Williams) are pretty capable. I do not see Willie Parker making to the 53 man roster. Hell, he might be gone before then. |

Today's the day we find out...from CSN's report this morning, it's between us and the Rams now...surprised that Denver is not in the talks anymore.
I don't think we need him, nor really want him now, at least not to carry the ball. CP, LJ, Torain and Williams will be solid.

There's some not that reliable information that with Coffee's retirement, the Niners have emerged as a last-second darkhorse for Westbrook.

Wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers stepped in. I'm thinking it really is just about money to the guy. Not even considering that point I don't think that our hand should be extended any longer.

With all these injuries I wonder if we could offer up Parker to someone. But since he's the #4 back right now and the likelihood of him getting cut is high, doubt someone would give up very much, if anything, in return.

re: Updated: 49ers Sign Brian Westbrook (update on Post #68)
One would think he would use his noggin and realize someone his age is not going to get a huge contract plus adding his injury to the mix. Most older players want to go to a good team and will take less money so long as they have a chance at getting a ring before they retire. I can't imagine he's not thinking a long those lines. If he's holding out for money and accepts a ton of money from a bad team just for the money he'd be an idiot. Maybe he was just waiting to see how the Skins looked or played in the first preseason game before making a decision.

Doubt it's all about money at this point for BW, I think he's just waiting for the right situation more than anything. And skipping out on some of training camp probably isn't a bad bonus either.
