Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

I am hearing more and more how this coming draft is deep in DT's, OL and possibly deep at CB & WR if a few (Cb&Wr) prospects with size show some some separation speed and skills. It could be deep there as well.

At Qb, after Luck and RG there is a significant drop off. Tannehill would be a desperate reach at #6.
If we can not move up from #6 to get Luck or RG, and if RG is gone when we pick at #6; by the numbers alone there would definitely be a stud blue chip player there for us to take at #6 at position of need. Morris Claiborne, CB LSU or Jonathan Martin, OT, Standford; or trade down a few spots for David DeCastro, OG Stanford and get an extra pick to get a Qb later and/or in FA.
Either one of these three is a quality day one starter for years to come, with pro bowl potential if they stay healthy. They would also fit really great in our scheme. What you would want out a #6 pick.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

Theres rumors and rumblings coming out of Andrew Lucks camp that his dad (and he) are starting to get worried and annoyed by Irsay's antics handling Peyton Manning situation...Stay tuned folks we've still got 2 1/2 months to hurt/help that situation.

100. Because once free agency roles around, we're going to have new members signing up and posting about the same thing, only with 5 different titles.

Which qb should we sign?

Debate: Orton v. Manning; who fits best for us?

Alternate scenario #19: What if we sign Manning, draft RG3, and trade RG3 for more picks?!

Check my blog for more info on this qb debate!

The qb nobody is talking about yet whom we will sign; his name rhymes with new seas.

The official give John Beck a 2nd chance thread! (started by J.B. who is completely unaffiliated with John Beck)

Our current HC, who is also our personnel guy, put his reputation on the line with Rex "thumbs" Grossman and John "Dump off" Beck. SMFH

Before you say it........Please do not tell me you believe Allen calls the shots?

People make too big a deal out of Shanny's words and not his actions. He sacrificed nearly nothing for short term situations in Rex and Beck.

Not to mention in 2004 when the Chargers were set to take Rivers they were coming off Drew Brees, who at the time they believed to be a bust, and Ryan Leaf, the poster boy for draft busts.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

I do believe sooner or later the Redskins will draft their own QB and he will be the face of the franchise for a long, long time. The Redskins haven't had success with QBs because they weren't evaluated thoroughly enough before they were selected. Who is the best QB we've had since the 1991 season? Brad Johnson, I would assume. In 2005 Joe Gibbs put all of his eggs in one basket concerning Jason Campbell when he should have taken Aaron Rodgers. It's a mystery as to why drafted quarterbacks haven't amounted to much for this franchise since the end of Gibbs I all the way up to this point.

I do firmly believe, that Rg3 will be the exception to that.

Allen does have some say in who gets hired. Galloway, Bidwell, and Hilliard all have connections with him.

@OP
This is just the nature of personnel acquisition. You will draft more failures than studs; it's just that you have a few successes to balance that out. Nobody cares about the other 8 duds in the Packers' 2005 draft because of Rodgers and the two other guys who made it for them. You need to have a great scouting department and have a scrappy and "economic" mind to milk the gains from this game.

I would say Trent Green and they were stupid to let him walk, Johnson sucked compared to what Green accomplished, the knee injury he sustained basically screwed him in St. Louis and made Warner the starter.

They both had nice careers and were let go too early by the Skins.

Brad won a SB.

The point I was making is the Redskins over the years have won with free agent quarterbacks rather than draft the so called franchise quarterback. The last great Redskins quarterback to be drafted was Mark Rypien who lead us to a Super Bowl victory. Why is it that during our numerous coaching changes we never have found the so called franchise QB. We have had really bad teams in the past 20 years which means we did have high picks. Is this franchise capable of selecting our quarterback in this years draft? I like Mike Shanahan as our coach and he will need time to make this team a winner. So lets not blame Mike for our failures in drafting a franchise quraterback, this is been going on way to long.

I was not blaming this coaching staff for our past failures in drafting a franchise quarterback, I was just pointed out that of all the coaching staffs we have had over the years we have never had a franchise quarterback drafted unless you count Sammy Baugh. I think most of us were not watching the Redskins at that tiime. The Redskins history shows they have more often then not picked up or traded for a veteran quarteback. We have had some success doing this but the modern day era we do need to be able to draft and groom our on young QB. I think another reason we have not drafted a franchise QB in the last 10 years is our unwilliness to start over and rebuild. Remember our old way of business was to use a quick fix approach. You know like bring in Donovan McNabb or Mark Brunell. Lets hope our history can change this years draft if we can get RGIII.
