That said, I don't really think Spags ever had any intention of leaving the Giants this year anyway. They have a ton of young up and coming players on that team via excellent drafting, they just won a Super Bowl, Coughlin and the rest of the staff is staying intact... Why leave? IMO he interviewed w/ the Skins just to make sure the Giants opened up their wallet. And they did. He's now the highest paid coordinator in football.

If you just won a Super Bowl, have an excellent team coming back next year, and you can get head coach $$ as a coordinator, why leave?

The opportunity to be a HC does not come along every day, depending on success or failure he may not get another chance.

When GW was extended he was given a lot of $ to keep him from going elsewhere & it appeared that he was being groomed as head coach, until a few weeks ago of course.
I guess I wish they would have a better list than what they brought to the table. I would guess there would be some list but there's got to be some "hidden gem" coaching talents out there. Maybe not hidden but some talented young coaching prospects out there to be interviewed. JS&Spags would be in that category. I guess i'm a little dissappointend in our "prospects."

BTW...i'm a vcu alum as well.

I agree, but it's not like this guy is a long time coordinator who's been getting spurned year in and year out for a HC job. He had been a position coach his entire career until 2007. He's got great personnel in NY and now a fully implemented system there. I don't see any reason why he won't be highly regarded next season as a HC candidate. And in the meantime he gets to defend a Super Bowl title and get HC $$ while doing it. He probably has a great connection and sense of loyalty to his players after what they pulled off this year. And he's got the paycheck now too. He made the right choice IMO.

I think Gibbs' influence on myself & other fans was so deep that it brought back our concept of who the redskins are, in that you could actually associate players & coaches w/the team again. Between 2000-2004, this team's identity was no identity, players & coaches came & went. In that climate, hiring Fassel, an ex-giant, would've not been a big deal. Now, we've actually tasted some continuity & feel like we have a team, so not hiring GW was viewed so negatively.

Like some others have posted, I believe that not hiring GW was the real reason behind the fan reaction more than anit-fassel feelings.

I agree, and said the exact same thing in a previous post. When the list of coaches was compiled [notwithstanding the return of Gibbs] Jim Fassels' name was atop the list. The backlash directed towards Fassel I do not believe to be personal, but in retaliation to Williams not being given the job.

  • Not the 'big splash' pick. Who knows what went down, but I'm going to say that if Snyder had really made the big push for Spagnuolo he probably could have gotten him here. Maybe it will be reported out differently, but as of this moment I'll give Snyder credit for avoiding the erge to jump on the hot assistant (an erge that the fan in me succumbed to) and - assuming that he wasn't just straight up spurred by Spagnuolo - actually shows a level of maturity that I have heretofore not given him credit for having.
  • It is basically Fassel's staff that is in place, to bring someone else in very well could have proven problematic. Hiring Fassel would also allow them to at least say that hiring the staff was part of a larger plan (to bring in Fassel) rather than just some desire to throw the whole organization into flux for the sake of change. They can at least say that bringing in Spagnuolo was necessary to do their due dilligence, and perhaps to gather some information, but that Fassel was the plan all along barring something really unforseen.
In the end Fassel is the logical choice, given the course of events, and Snyder's ability to navigate the hype surrounding Spagnuolo when so many others couldn't, including myself, is a sign of growth. Barring something out of left field (and your next coach of the Washington Redskins ... Pete Carroll!) I'd say a Fassel hire actually redeems Snyder in my eyes at least. My sense is that the feeling has cooled considerably (another credit to Snyder) surrounding Fassel and that his hire won't cause that public outcry that it would have a couple of weeks ago. That being said, if anyone still feels compelled to give up their season tickets as a result, please let me know
Just stop, you're too rational.

Just to add I think we need to give some credit to Snyder and Cerrato. Initially Snyder said he was going to be patient and go through the process. There was a list of candidates, and they worked diligently through that list even though it meant waiting until the Super Bowl was over. Multiple candiates were interviewed multiple times. Yes they went about things a little strange by hiring the assistants first, but from all accounts the strongest candidates had rubber stamped the moves.

Fassel was very close to the job in 2004, so obviously there's already a good relationship there. I won't have a problem with hiring him at all. We seem to have a solid staff around him and that's really the most important part.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

At this point it feels a lot more like we have to take Fassel because we've got no one else. It's like P.E. in middle school where the fat kid gets picked last.

Everyone else has turned us down or withdrawn their name, or in the case of Williams just been let go.

If I were Fassel and I got selected as HC, I'd be a little pissed that after I got interviewed several weeks went by where other guys got interviewed. Makes it look like we're settling for Fassel, not enthusiastically taking him as our top choice.

Fassel has clearly been the favorite all along. He's been kept in the loop by Snyder and by all accounts he's been patient and understanding during the process.

Who has turned us down exactly other than maybe Pete Carroll, and he was a bit of a longshot anyway. Spagnoulo wasn't even offered the job.

I'm sorry I know this whole coaching search has to be torture on you guys.

But that is one of the funniest analogies I have seen.

Does he deserve to be "enthusiastically taken as our top choice?" I don't think so. The guy has been out of football for a year and a half, and failed to get coordinator positions with more than one team since. He should be thrilled that anyone is even considering him as a HC candidate. No team other than the Skins has even farted in his general direction as a HC since the Ravens dumped him. I'm not saying he'll be a bad coach for us, but it has to make you wonder why he has drawn ZERO interest from the rest of the league.

Re: Spagnuolo stays with Giants!

Interestingly, JLC is reporting that Grimm was never contacted for an interview. Now, as much as we have been told that this search is about being thorough, don't you think they'd at least talk to the ex-Hog? And how bad is this search now that it's down to 2 re-treads and Meeks (who is probably the most promising). If Grimm never even gets a call, this has to be the least thorough "thorough" interview process.

SC Skins Fan,
Let this serve as your first official warning! Logic, and reason have no place here. If you would care to re-phrase your post to reflect the necessary level of unfounded panic, mindless chaos, and other.........falling sky, lemming-like behavior, perhaps an acceptable compromise can be obtained.
IF NOT.................it's question 3 for you sir!

Why?

If he wasn't considered to be a candidate why would they talk to him?

So far they've talked with Williams, Schwartz, Spags, Meeks, Mariucci, Carroll, and Fassel (am I missing anyone). So by not interviewing Grimm this wasn't a thorough process??

I think Snyder got a farily comprehensive list together & was able to interview all interested (& granted permission). He even talked to Carroll. Regardless of whether he would be good in the nfl a 2nd time around, it shows that Snyder is willing to explore all options. Regardless of who he'd like to talk to, only so many coaches are available.

Go Rams!
