Foster is an average to below average NFL starter, he isn't special, his new contract reflects the reality. Brown is really good against the run, he is a liability in coverage. His contract reflects that he is above average, to good, not great.

You cool with Vigil and Spaight starting 3 or 4 games next year?
Zach Brown and Foster were balling out last year when the DL was healthy !
And Zach Vigil played really well, what he did behind a depleted DL at the end of the season is underrated IMO.

Draft picks are always a toss up anyway, so I'd rather take the chance at a position we don't have a viable option than hoping to get an upgrade over what we have while leaving a gaping hole on our roster.

I second this. Been years since Phil Taylor has been an effective lineman, at some point you can't keep relying on him.

Every year we bitch about not having a stud DT, and every year we are left complaining. I like Ioannidis but he still has plenty of room for improvement, and if every SB winner of the last decade hasn't taught anyone anything, it's that having a thick d-line rotation is never a bad thing.

Jesus. This is getting stupid.

Our down lineman are Allen, Ionnidis, Hood, McClain, Mcghee, Lanier. Our edge guys are Kerrigan and Smith.

IF YOU DON'T THINK 1ST ROUND TALENT WOULD UPGRADE THAT GROUP, IDK WHAT TO TELL YA.

Just FYI, Dline edge and interior is a ROTATIONAL position.

The team that just won the super bowl realize this better than anyone.

And I would award play time based on merit, the most likely scenario being working the 1st round pick into the rotation slowly. Ionnidis was a different player without Allen next to him, so if anyone would be giving up snaps then probably Ionnidis.

He would be a definite upgrade to the unit. He is solid and that sounds like a good deal if he is as good as he was when he was playing for the Giants.

I get the logic but any position group can be depleted with injuries during any stretch of games.

So the long term strategy of picking the best player available is better than passing on superior talent to only fill a need. I realize need is a factor but passing on superior talent, more times than not doesn't pay off.

If the FO thought the next Luke Keuchly was available at 13, should be pass on him and pick a different position?

And no disrespect but Foster is just a guy, with a 2mil per year contract: https://overthecap.com/position/inside-linebacker

Link? I don't see this anywhere. Would be great news if they sealed this deal, young DL with talent..

I didn't say first round talent is not an upgrade. I said don't draft lower round talent in the first round out of need.

You said a little more than that.

You persist in seeing the glass as half empty. I choose to be more positive and to see it as half full. We have a number of good young players who are only going to get better. Yes, we need more good players, but no team has all the depth they would like to have.

Also, and I feel really weird saying this, I think the FO is going about things the right way nowadays. I think we can become contenders soon. I don't feel like going through position by position and player by player opinions right now but suffice it to say that I have a much higher opinion and belief in a number of the players you mentioned than you do.

We're not yet done in FA and I expect that we'll have a good draft, so there's no telling how much we can upgrade our talent at this point. I'm hoping for the most possible off-season success.

Well our rotation was suppose to be helped by McClain and McGee...lol. I'm curious to know what the front office was thinking when they signed these two. Basically they gave us little to nothing.

If they sign Hankins they may go all depth.
