Re: Brown opts to go to Denver

It would have been nice to have him, but it's not going to make or break our season that's for sure.

We managed 40 sacks last year without a true pass rusher, and with the return of Daniels and Arrington we should still be able to bring enough heat.

Thanks, Eeich. To tell the truth I wasn't sure, so I hedged my comment by simply saying "second pick". Anyway, I didn't mean to cause trouble!

I have sympathy with the "sour grapes" attitude, but this wouldn't have been a Big-Daddy style fiasco--it's health incentive based.

Clearly, the FO is committed to changing it's rep--we are NOT the ATM of the league anymore!!! Probably this will take a while to settle. For now, agents and players expect us to act like we did in the past, and they get pissed and go elsewhere when we don't break the bank. Down the road--assuming we get better!--it will be easier to land players, and no one will be expecting the mega-bucks giveaway that Danny-boy is infamous for. But we're suffereing throught the transition right now.

Re: Brown opts to go to Denver

It is absolutely hilarious to see such abusiveness towards Brown when, clearly, had he chosen to sign with us this board would have lit up in singing his praises. I agree with the previous arguments that bringing him would have been, if not a coup, at least a low cost investment with tremendous potential upside.

But there's a positive side to losing Brown, and its not that he's a whiny chump or whatever. In this failed transaction we saw again the theme that has dominated our front office maneuvering this offseason: refusal to go above our maximum price for free agents, even if it means losing them to another team. Would anyone dispute that in the past we would have thrown some outragous 8 million dollar signing bonus at an injury plagued underachiever when other teams were offering much less? This time we didn't, just like we didn't with Smoot and Pierce, even though it hurt to see them leave. While no one knows exactly how this offseason will turn out in the long run, what is apparent to us right now is that the redskins have finally learned from their past mistakes. Looking forward to a smart draft and a promising season.

We're on the same page, djnemo. I agree and I share your optimism.

Brown missed like 47 games-maybe in the draft we can land Dan Cody or Shaun Cody or Matt Roth at DE

I wonder if there aren't any true "studs" left with out pick if we could trade our pick and end up with a combination of a good DE/CB.

We could very easily land one of those players, but it would prove to be at the expense of a WR or CB in the first round. The only way we will end up with one of those players is if we trade WAY down in the first round, like into the mid-20s. The only way I see that happening is if one of the QBs or RBs falls inexplicably and someone is willing to give up the world (and by world, I mean their late first rounder, plus their first round pick next year and a 3rd this year) to get them. I don't see that happening.

Jovan Haye is a good target in the 3rd round. He has great pass-rush ability. In the first, as I see it, we will narrow it down to only 5 possibilities if we stay at number 9: Mike Williams, Braylon Edwards, Pac-Man Jones, Antrel Rolle, and Shawne Merriman. It is assured that at least 3 and probably 4 of those players will be gone. If we trade down, I could see us adding probably 5 players to that list: Troy Williamson, Roddy White, Carlos Rogers, Heath Miller and Erasmus James, depending on how the draft breaks down and how far we drop.

Re: Brown opts to go to Denver

like I said earlier, I hope brown, blows out his ass, that doesn't mean that there in the superbowl, I posted earlier, and I stick by it, F#$^ Brown, I can care less, this offseason has been a pain in the ass, we can't keep our own, All Brown was doing was waiting for Denver to up the price, because why not come to a team that is 3rd, instead of going to a team that was torched by the Colts, what the hell are we not saying or is saying thats running everyone off

Re: Brown opts to go to Denver

We're saying that we're not the Redskins of old who would most likely have paid about 5x what Brown is worth.

This is a possibility, and I have a few ideas how it could go down, especially considering that we should look at WR in the draft also. I will offer several different scenarios, one which gets a CB, one which gets a DE first, one which gets a WR first, etc. and we can see how everyone likes either one. Both assume that we trade with the Saints, although obviously there are a few other teams that would want to trade up. I assume that the Saints are moving up to get Derrick Johnson, and we get our 2nd rounder (#40) back from them as compensation for moving down.

Option 1 (CB, DE, WR): We select Carlos Rogers at 16, Justin Tuck or Matt Roth at 40, and perhaps Vincent Jackson, Matt Jones, or Fred Gibson at 76. The flaw here of course is that the Chiefs might take Rogers at 15, thus screwing our plan.

Option 2 (CB, WR, DE): We select Rogers at 16, Chris Henry or Reggie Brown at 40, and Jovan Haye at 76.

Option 3 (DE, WR, CB): We select Erasmus James at 16, Henry or Brown at 40, and perhaps Darrent Williams, Stanley Wilson, or Domonique Foxworth at 76.

Option 4 (DE, CB, WR): We select James at 16, Marlin Jackson or Bryant McFadden at 40, and Jackson/Jones/Gibson at 76.

Option 5: (WR, CB, DE): We select Troy Williamson or Roddy White at 16, Jackson or McFadden at 40, and Haye at 76.

Option 6: (WR, DE, CB) We select Williamson/White at 16, Tuck/Roth at 40, and Williams/Wilson/Foxworth at 76.

My favorite option remains staying at 9 and taking Mike Williams, then probably adding Stanley Wilson at 76. But of these trade down options, I probably prefer the first one which which could add C. Rogers, J. Tuck, and V. Jackson.

Any other opinions on this?

Re: Brown opts to go to Denver

Ramseyfan you where correct about C. Brown-5yrs. missed 33 games and was not very productive when he did play. Daniels will be back- but he is no big sack DE- In my opinion a pass rushing DE should be the priority-we will all find out on draft day-still 3 wks. away
