11 touchbacks for Hall in 2003 compared to Vanderjerks career total of 8? WOW! Apparently Hurricaine Betty stuck around for quite awhile in 2003.

Hall's accuracy from 50+ yards was also among the tops in the league (if not the top) in 2003. Saying he has injury issues based on 2004 alone is like saying Jansen (aka THE ROCK) or Arrington have injury issues.

Vanderjerk is so bad kicking off that HE DOESN'T. The Colts brought in some other guy to do the kicking off for them.

I'm happy w/ Hall or Chandler. I think they both showed they are good kickers. I say let those two fight it out during training camp.

Hall has a beast leg which means he can hit from the 50s. I like him as a kicker, but his biggest weakness is acuracy. I bet the JETS wished they had him last weekend.

Gmanc - I'll take Kimrin - thanks.....

yeah they brought in spaz wad gramatica cuz vande just doesn't have the leg strength(if he really ever did) to kick solid kickoffs on a regular basis.

honestly, I'd rather have Vanderdrunk over Hall...however, as SC has pointed out, i wouldn't take the cap hit for it...

Career Percentage by Distance
1-19 yards
Vanderjagt: 100% (5-5)
Hall: 100% (3-3)

20-29 yards
Vanderjagt: 97% (61-63)
Hall: 95% (58-61)

30-39 yards
Vanderjagt: 92% (56-61)
Hall: 79% (67-85)

INSIDE 40
Vanderjagt: 95% (122-129)
Hall: 86% (128-149)

40-49 yards
Vanderjagt: 79% (58-73)
Hall: 58% (41-71)

50+ yards
Vanderjagt: 67% (14-21)
Hall: 48% (13-27)

People may knock Vanderjagt because he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, but to compare him to Hall & Chandler...it isnt even close...

check the stats...the return average for both kickers is identical...and for those who contest Vanderjagt's leg...he's got one more over 50 with 6 fewer attempts than Hall...

what would you rather have, a highly accurate kicker who doesn't kick off, or a decent kicker that can boom kickoffs...

but like someone posted before, Vande automatically kicks 8 games a year indoors while Hall has always played for outdoor teams. anyone know of a site that might show outdoor vs indoor stats cuz that'd be the more telling stat. plus the only kicker I'd probably pay more than 2-3 million too would be Adam Vin. of the pats. cuz dude is always money in big situations.

I'm not denying Vandy is clearly the better kicker, hell he's one of the best of all-time.

Hall reminds me a lot of Chip Lohmiller. Cannon of a leg, not as accurate as you'd like him to be but can still get the job done. Hall also had the pleasure of kicking 8 games a year in the swirling winds of Giants stadium, not exactly a kicker's paradise.

I'd have to say that the kicking game is the least of our worries.

Ramseyfan:

I was not trying to hedge my bet here so let me be as clear as I can.

I do NOT want the Skins to pursue Vanderjagt. That is not because I think the Skins' kicking game is great - it is decent but not much better than that - but because Vanderjagt will command a big price and I do not think the Skins should allocate resorces there.

I was responding to someone who said that Hall and Chandler gave the skins a solid kicking game. With Hall's injury the Skins kicking game was really mediocre. In fact, Gibbs had to defer on a long field goal attempt in a late season game because he kinda felt like Chandler wasn't gonna get it to the goal posts on three bounces.

Can the kicking game be improved? You bet. Can it be improved without spending a lot of money on it? Not likely. Should that "additional money" be spent on other parts of the team? Definitely.

Summary:

Kicking game could be better.

Vanderjagt would make it better

Likely cost for Vanderjagt is higher than the Skins should pay.

Most definitely. Just like you say, the money could be spent to address other, more important, areas.

Vanderjagt 2004 Indoor v. Outdoor

Indoor - 12/15 (80%)
Outdoor - 8/10 (80%)

Vanderjagt 2003 Indoor v. Outdoor

Indoor - 19/19 (100%)
Outdoor - 18/18 (100%)

Hall 2003 Indoor v. Outdoor

Indoor - 1/2 (50%)
Outdoor - 24/31 (77%)

Guys like Jason Hanson, Vinatieri, and Vanderjagt are just flat out great kickers, and it doesn't matter where they kick, they produce results. Hall has never been the most accurate kicker...

but, as others have stated...the money can be better spent elsewhere...i wouldn't say the kicking game is fine, but adequate enough to get through the season.
