I said defensive end too. I think if anything we can resign Daniels since no one is banging his door down.

I also really want to see Wilson or Jackson start for a bit maybe. Rookies aren't going to improve unless they see REAL PLAYING time, not that crap during preseason.

I'll go with that. Especially if we get a strong LB behind them.

No brainer, punter. We need all the other positions as of now, unless more signing are made to restock those critical positions.

But if the point is to use what picks/signings we have available to upgrade our team the most, Punter has to be considered. Right now our only signed punter was not even considered good enough to beat out Plack during the season, and there is a proven high quality starter seemingly available in Hunter Smith. Every other position we at least have starting talent signed to cover the roster spots, and any signing/pick even if an upgrade would not be a "dramatic" upgrade (excluding the 1st round pick, since that Obviously would not be used on a punter.)

Of course we could always call Joey T. and see if he would punt for free

You can address this in the FA signings but at a low cost. The cowboys found Paulescu after McBriar got hurt and was ok for them, he will probably be available on the cheap side instead of Hunter Smith who would cost more.

I disagree with this. First, consider how our team is currently constructed, our draft picks and all of the free agents available. If you had to pick one player who would have the greatest impact on our season next year, the choice would be Hunter Smith.

Defense is our strength. We need to start playing to our strengths instead of looking for the next big jersey seller.

If we make the playoffs and win a game or two, the jerseys will sell themselves.

I think this is a shortsighted view that, to date, has been shared by the front office.

We just signed three players for 180 million and then we look for the cheapest punter and place kicker.

When every game is a death match, wouldn't it make sense to have the best punter and kicker?

With this team an extra 3-6 points per game by additional made field goals and improved field position would be worth it's weight in gold.

Re: What Position Would You NOT Address This Off-Season

Maybe I'm reading the question wrong but I'm taking it to mean one position would not be addressed in the draft OR free agency. Which means you can't say punter and then say we can get a punter later in free agency. One position would not be addressed at all. Am I reading this wrong?

Pockets, do you agree with SFRedskins or not? I couldn't tell from your two posts.

I think we should sign Hunter today, been calling for him for a while. He wants to be here and we need a punter.

Nope, others just don't know how to read and comprehend.

You're reading it right. And when I say free agency, I'm talking about the market for free agents right now. I'm not talking about an undrafted free agent that doesn't get drafted, and I'm only talking about our first two picks. I realize that a 7th rounder started at Safety for us last year, and a 5th rounder at DT but let's assume we won't find a legit starter year one in either of those rounds.

My bad, I skimmed the first post too quickly. I disagree that we should try the "wait and see" approach to finding a punter.

I don't want the Cowboys (or anyone else's) second punter. I want Smith who is arguably the best punter in the league. I don't think it makes sense to spend $200 million and then try and find a punter on the cheap.

I would have to go with DE seeing how we now have the best DT in league playing on the 4th best defense in the league.

Smoot, any idea what the hold up is with signing Hunter?

Why should a punter be found at low cost? and I don't think many cowboys fans would say they were ok with Paulescu after the Steelers game where special teams lost it for them. If we are going to have brutal slugfests every game(and in our division, I think that is a guarantee in atleast 6 of the games), then we ought to have a weapon that can pin back the opponent every time we have to punt.
I don't think Hunter is asking for a huge deal, I honestly don't know, but any reasonable deal to lock this guy up ought to be made sooner rather than later.
