And a trade would never happen post-June 1. First off, the draft would have already happened by then, so any scenario involving picks would be out the window.

Secondly, teams just don't do that. They like to get new guys in the fold earlier so they know what holes they need to fill in FA and the draft.

Only because of the cap situation? So the fact that he's a far more talented than the running back that would be replacing him shouldn't carry any weight in this situation?

But as far as all these trade talks, I'm sure it has been made aware to other teams that Portis is available, and if anyone in the Redskins front office says otherwise, they're lying. It may not have been a direct statement, but I'm sure that it leaked somehow. And with teams throwing 2nd overall picks around, I'm willing to bet that Portis is finished as a Redskin...

Of course his talent level, leadership and production are big reasons why to not trade him, I should have said the cap being one the main reasons why we won't trade him.

Trading him would hit us with a cap hit of $8.2 million in 2007. He's already on the books for $7.1 million in 2007 as it is, so it wouldn't be that much more to absorb. BUT, the Redskins have no intention of having him count $7.1 million in 2007: they'll restructure (he'll be willing) and give him what his contract calls for. That will reduce his cap number to something like $3 million, so really, the opportunity cost of trading Portis is like $5.2 million or something.

If the 'Skins wanted to make this their major personnel move and not really make many other changes, they'd still be able to get rid of either Archuleta or Lloyd, but probably not both.

I'd say the likelihood of all this happening is something like 0.00001%. Gibbs loves Portis, and with Duckett leaving, we can't just go with Betts as our #1 and have nobody behind him (Rock Cartwright does not count, he is not good enough).
Thanks Schneed for claification on this. So basically we can rule out any trade with him because we need to have him restrucure to save cap space in 2007.

Just for discussion, i would hate to see CP go b/c he is one of the "core" guys. It's not going to happen though. This organization has been blasted this year about letting "core" guys go.

Now, all of the overpaying, questionable FO moves the FO makes have left us w/ a severe lack of talent on D, essentially no draft, and no depth on D. With that being said if the skins did this they might be-would be in better shape. They would fill the need in CB. They would be able to get some major young talent on D. W/ the #2 & 6 pick we could keep one trade down into the lower 1st and get a 2nd most likely. 3 top picks for an aging D. Wow. Thoughts?

This of course is w/out taking CAP #'s into account.

I think I agree with this assessment. Gibbs'll say something to the effect that you can't pass on an ace corner and the 2nd overall pick in the draft for ANYONE in the NFL. I'm guessing that would be the gist of it if he were dealt. I really can't say that I think Clinton will be back with this team next season. I really think he'll end up in some other city while the Skins are taking a player (maybe) and they're first round pick in the draft.

I think this is a serious run at Clinton being made by the Lions and the Skins are at least listening. If they do deal Clinton, though, they need another running back. Where does this guy come from? Right now, if the move happened, I'd be crying my eyes out that 1. Clinton would be gone (more than the next) and 2. because Darren McFadden isn't going into the draft.

So, where would they go if they did make this trade? Any thoughts?

Yeah basically. At the very least, it's fair to say that while trading him wouldn't be impossible from a cap standpoint, doing so would limit our other free agent signings.

Maybe that's a good thing, I dunno. Maybe we don't want to bring in a whole lot of free agents.

But the bigger issue is that Gibbs loves Portis and would never trade him. He just means too much to the team, Betts' great year notwithstanding.

Wow, that's a total misunderstanding of Joe Gibbs. I couldn't disagree with you more. No way Portis gets traded. No way in hell.

If our FO would trade Portis away, I would think that I probably would take a year or two off from football....

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions

Why do you assume that it was leaked that Portis is available? Isn't it possible that the rumor started based on speculation by others around the league?

That rumor started because people looked at Betts and said hey he's a starter. The Skins might want to think about trading Portis.

That doesn't mean the Skins are thinking about it.

jones really hasnt lived up to expectations so far, portis would upgrade their running game big time, they do need a rb. jones has had 3 years and hasnt proven much. id go for trade 2 or 3 in this scenario, not #1

Just curious to know how you are sure CP will be willing to restructure. If it means less $ in his pocket I doubt CP will restructure.

Gibbs does like CP and AS likes Betts so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Re: Rumored Portis Trade offered FROM! the Lions

It would be hard to turn down a Portis for Bly and the number 2 pick scenario, but I would probably weigh-in on the "opposed" side of that one. Essentially it would constitute a trade of Champ and a 2nd rounder for Bly (with a 3-year Portis rental) and the second pick in the draft.

Still, I think Portis is too valuable to the team in too many ways to be traded. Add in the signal it sends to his teammates and I just think it's a bad plan. Before trading Portis, we would need a Hershel Walker type offer and I don't see anyone making such an offer.

We'll see. Nothing would surprise me from this team or this coaching staff anymore. I don't buy Gibbs for a minute when he says "we're NOT trading Clinton." Like I said before, I heard that song and dance before the 05 draft when, at FedEx for the draft day party, not long before the draft, he said, "We gotta go get Patrick some weapons." They went on to draft Rogers and Campbell.

I don't disagree that he loves Clinton Portis. But I think that he thinks he could win with Betts and another back. I hope I'm wrong, but the way things have been going over the past few years, I don't know that I am. I think it's about a 40% chance Clinton is back next season. I just don't see it happening.

The money owed to CP would turn into a signing bonus/guaranteed money.

I could be wrong though. Schneed?
