Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
I have no idea how the Redskins or WHY the redskins continue to rework contracts of older players (samuels, griffin, Randel el ect). all this does is just create problems down the road, over paying for over the hill talent. Hayneworth is going to get upwards of 12 to 15 million a year. We dont have the room to do this. The Post says we were still over the cap last week even with reworking contracts again. This crap is getting old. This is why we dont have money to sign decent depth to our team and why we continue to let quality players leave and sign players that dont do shit while they are here. We want to go after Canty from dallas??? He would fill the role of Evans....so why even go after him?? He is a great locker room guy, the guys really like and respect him. This to me is one of the typical Redskin errors.

I tried to look backwards but could not figure it out. Do your numbers count on us cutting either JT or SS? or are we able to try for AH even if we keep both? Thanks guys

But you could still get around the 30% rule with an adequately lengthy contract, perhaps 6-8 years, allowing you to grow base salaries and include unguaranteed option bonuses in the out years. Perhaps the base salary in 2009 would have to be $1.5 million in order to keep with 30%, but I can't see it needing to be much higher than that. The absolute max cap hit for Hall would be $5.0 million, and I think closer to $4.0 is realistic given the 'Skins' ability to restructure/extend their other guys.

The way the math works out for me, we can keep both JT and Springs, and still afford to grab Haynesworth, resign Hall, tender the guys important to us, and still MAYBE have room for some OL or LB depth.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
I totally agree but if Haynesworth is seeing the end of the tunnel and knows he wants a ring before his career ends he's going to be looking for a team that has the best chance to get it for him along with the money. Cause who ever signs him will have him tied up for a few yrs and his next best chance will be when he's in his 30's. Teams will probably not pay him top dollar then and most likely his abilities will probably start to slide.
I think if he's smart he's going to be looking for his best chance and best team to end his career on. The problem with Tampa is (and I like Tampa) with a new coach, no QB, a blown up defense, nobody knows how they will be next year. They could be the Cinderella team or more then likely an 8-8 team. If it's between us and Tampa I would give us the better chance of going to the SB over Tampa. Last year was our transition year so we are in a second year with the same offense not starting new. We are in our second year with our Coach's which means players know what to expect. We had the 4th ranked defense and knowing defense is what's getting teams to the playoffs adding Haynesworth would make our team a whole lot better. True we had low scoring but most of the teams that made the playoffs that had a great defense scored low in their games all season also or so I thought I heard somewhere. ie; Baltimore, and Pittsburge, and Philli. I'm not sure of the others....I wanted to lump Arizona in there also but they could score. In any event, looking at the Skins if we could simply add one or two pieces to our defense to make it better then 4th ranked and add a few pieces to the offense coming back healthy having a better understanding of the offensive plays looks better then an unknown Tampa. I'm being very optimistic. I don't know who the other suiters were for Haynesworth to know if they would offer him a better chance for a SB ring. |

We are on the cusp of being really good...but also on the cusp of being really bad. So who knows? He could come here and dominate, or like everyone is saying, he could come here and be fat. What would upset me the most though, is if he were to go somehwere else, and play awesome. That would suck.

It's not like Tampa is an NFL wasteland though, they are generally pretty competitive, it's a very desirable location, and they have big money to spend. I really wouldn't be surprised at all if AH lands there.

I'm pretty stunned we only offered a 5th round tender for Montgomery. But it would kind of jive with what I'd heard (or not heard) about interest around the league in Montgomery, which is surprisingly low.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
He's flashed for us but has been pretty inconsistent in his young career. And there's no shortage of press coming out of Redskins Park speaking to his lack of work ethic, and Blache's tendencies to ride him hard for that reason. Better to get him for cheap (conserve that cap space for the big fish) than pretend someone would pay a 2nd rounder for him.

These days, cash is becoming a bigger constraint than cap. I don't know about Tampa's ability to pay huge cash, maybe they can. Question is, is our cap constraint more of a concern for us, or is their cash constraint more of a concern for them.

Re: Current Redskins Salary Cap Status - 2009
So its my understanding that we are 12M under the cap now. We need 2.5M for draft picks, and we're probably tendering a few of our own guys, so lets say we save 3M for that. so that gives us 6.5M to work with.
Hall would cost us 4M against the 2009 cap. However, signing Hall likely means releasing springs, so if we made both those moves, we're still left with 9M to play with. Lets say we do land Haynesworth. The experts here think this could be done and only cost us 7M against the 2009 cap. So that leaves us with 2M But now Dockery is available and signing him would probably cost 3-4M against the cap. However, its my understanding that we could restructure Taylors contract and save 2M, leaving us right around the salary cap. So, at the end of the day, if we made those moves, our entire defense would be in extremely good shape, with the only noteable vacancy at Strong Side LB. On offense, we are set with the only noteable need for an upgrade at RT. (RG is also a need but i cant see anyone replacing Thomas this year, not with his contract). If we don't go after Haynesworth or we decide to cut Taylor, i think its likely we have room to sign Canty, a WR such as Amani Toomer or Devery Henderson, and a LB.
