The part BHA is missing - as usual - is our cap situation for the next two years. We are absolutely flushed with cap space. We almost have more than we can use. We could easily give Trent $35M guaranteed over the next two years, fully guaranteed, making him a Skin for the next two seasons, and it literally would not constrain our cap situation one iota. If that’s not good enough for him then this was a money play for him all along. This is a good way to figure out where his heart is, right a lot of wrongs, and galvanize the locker room and the fans. If he wants a big contract like you suspect, then you move on to making the best business decision you can, which is probably a trade. But you might as well find out first.

Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Quote:
All the guys we are going to release are largely failures, hurt too much or are not playing up to the level of their salary. Trent has had a year to renew, both physically or mentally. He is still the best OL on this team. He is still in the top of the NFL for OT. Keep him and fill a big hole on the team. Penn was a one year bandaid. We still have to draft with our top picks ( third or fourth rounder) for the OL. But resigning Trent, Scherff and Flowers stabilizes our OL. We.’ll get two years out of Trent, by that time we can have drafted his replacement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

No one has mentioned he’s one joint away from a 1 year suspension. Need to have an opt out if he gets pegged for hitting the ganja again. Doubt he’d go for that though.

Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
There are a lot of very recent media articles on Trent (since the firing of BA) which give a lot of hints that TW will “consider” coming back here. That tells me he is open to renegotiation of his contract, versus just issuing a flat rejection.
It’s up to Rivera about whether he wants TW back and whether our new HC thinks that Trent can be part of a revitalized and disciplined Redskin team. His attitude while talking to Rivera will be more important than his playing ability. If he can soak up the new culture of “winning” he might be invited back! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I am sure it's about the guaranteed money in his contract, but I think if the Skins/Rivera talk with TW they could work out the money. At this point, I think TW coming back happy would send a far more important message that things are different then trading him would. |

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Generally true, BUT we have an extremely young team, and we are in a good position regarding the cap. In addition, I think TW's main concern is the guaranteed money, not necessarily being the top paid OT, I think you can take the 10 Million he was due in 2019 tack it to a 2020 and 2021 guaranteed contract and get him back on board and bring a team voice back in a positive way. If you can't make the money work, ie he wants top 5 OT numbers and excessive years guaranteed, then you trade him. But remember, he called out BA as racist, he is one failed test away from a year suspension, he was out for a year(that may help or hurt his value), so I don't think it's a slam dunk a team is going to trade like they would have during training camp (thanks so much BA)

Either way that it goes...this should be the absolutely first thing we need to figure out. Like immediately.
When cant afford to sit around and lollygag with the LT position...its too fucking important

We already made him the highest paid OT in the league and front-loaded the contract. If Trent didn't want to play under a contract without guaranteed money in the final years, then he shouldn't have signed it in the first place. Giving an old, injury-prone, drama-generating, locker room distracting player one failed drug test away from a year long suspension a new deal would be ridiculously stupid. If the team did this, I would lose all faith in Rivera. EDIT: Updated reference to "BA" to "TW." Bruce is still on the brain evidently lol.

Re: Trent Williams ends season-long holdout, rejoins Redskins
Given that pot use is likely to be part of the next CBA and that he has stayed away from it for the last 6-7 years since his suspension, I dont think other teams would be bothered by that. If they are they can put it in aa a stipulation in any new contract. 31 is not that old now for a good tackle who takes care of himself..... I think the biggest issue is his injury history and the prospect of guaranteeing salary, even if only for injury.

Hard to lose faith in Rivera over bringing an elite player back into the fold with smiles all around. (depending on the deal it took to get those smiles) |

Unless the Redskins get an offer they can't refuse for the #2 pick, I think we have to make things work with Trent to fill the LT spot.

Trent USED to be "elite." He isn't anymore. He's a very, very good - but declining - tackle who is often injured. He's also a cancer. Yes, we shared the same enemy (Bruce), but that does not defend his actions or his motives. Trent wasn't the champion of the "fire bruce allen" movement because Bruce was a terrible, sleazy, front office executive. By Trent's own words, his dissatisfaction started because he asked for a new contract with 2 years left and was told No. At that point, he'd decided to hold out. The cancer-scare stuff happened later, and, instead of filing a grievance with the NFLPA (which is what a player would do if they had a legitimate concern), Trent leaked vague, but inflammatory reports regarding his treatment. When he finally did speak publicly, he made the incendiary and unsubstantiated claim that Bruce was a racist. Trent claimed that "no one" from the team called him or visited him when this was later proved to be false. Trent claimed he incurred $200,000 in travel expenses for his surgery when Snyder gave him his freaking private jet. He accused the team of telling him not to worry about the growth at the same time other reports confirmed that, years earlier, the team had suggested he see a specialist and Trent didn't make the appointment. Who are we to believe in all this? The Team and NFLPA both wanted to do an investigation, but Trent refused to allow it. Those telling the truth have nothing to hide. Trent may have once been a positive team captain, but he turned into a cancer. This is not to say that Bruce Allen was free from blame, but you can't simply pretend this was all bruce's doing. Trent bears most of the blame for how this all played out. Competent, well-run franchises don't reward such toxic and insubordinate behavior with new contracts. It is my firm opinion that it is in everyone's best interest for Trent and the team to part ways.
