Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones
Not sure about the Lions. But for what it's worth, apparently the Packers offered him a contract to play RT, and Jones said no. So it seems they didn't pass on him.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones
Vinny aka "Bobby the Brain Heenan" cut 2 RB's knowing Portis is not 100%.
Portis misses practice with lower-leg problems Running back Clinton Portis sat out practice today because of leg problems. "It's really one leg," he said. "It's just my right leg. I've got plantar faciitis, an ankle, the inside of my MCL, and a calf all on my right leg. So if I can get a new lower leg, I'll be fine." In the 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Portis rushed for a season-high 109 yards on 15 carries (a 7.3-yard average). He gained 78 yards on one rush in the third quarter - the longest gain of his career. Portis acknowledged he has not had much interaction with new play-caller Sherman Lewis, who came out of retirement about two weeks ago to serve as an offensive consultant. Owner Daniel Snyder promoted Lewis, 67, to call plays after stripping Jim Zorn of the responsibility following the team's latest dreary loss to a formerly winless team, which has occurred four times this season. Lewis is unfamiliar with the team's personnel and knows little about Washington's running game, but Portis expects the running game to work well. "It ain't hard, I mean, you either run gut, counter, stretch, toss, dive, or draw," Portis said. "You can call it however you want to call it, but them are the only runs in football. For him to be an offensive coordinator for as long as he has, I'm sure he knows that as well. Maybe it's the formations. I don't know why he would say that, but I don't think it's too hard to call the running game."

I don't think anyone hates Mason, a lot of can just see that he's had chances and never really showed anything outside of some preseason games.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Aldridge, sign OT Levi Jones
Stephon Heyer has been directly responsible for two safeties so far this season. He was blown up by Peppers in the Carolina game at RT for a safety & again Sunday against KC at LT causing Collins to be sacked in the end-zone. This guy plays like what he is, an undrafted free agent. He just happens to be all we have right now, hopefully not the best we can get.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones
I heard Gil Brandt today on NFL radio saying he didn't like the Levi Jones signing, he thought the Skins should have raided some practice squads and brought in some potential diamonds in the rough, he named a guy on the Giants PS I forget who though.
A few minutes later though he said he likes Vinny and thinks he's a good football guy who "knows what he's doing", so take his thoughts with a serious grain of salt. |

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones
I'd say it's likely because we're more looking for people that could contribute now and whoever we'd sign on o-line will still be available if we need them later in the season. Of course that means that they won't be game conditioned or familiar with our playbook though.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones
It wasn't about Mason's running ability, it was due to his limitations in picking up blitzes.

Well looking at the quote he didn't say it in the "Dan Snyder is the equivalent of Steinbrenner" way that it would seem. His quote was toting the company line in that the Redskins have as much talent as the Yankees.
