Basically Bruce Allen saw an opportunity to protect the teams future when the cap came back and decided to take advantage of the uncapped year.
Well, let's pretend that you are correct here for a moment.

If what you say is true, then the Redskins only owed Haynesworth something less than $21M as a roster bonus last April. I am not sure that is true, but let me assume it is. So how much less did they owe him? Let's assume it was only $15M for the sake of argument.

Your contention is that they paid Haynesworth $21M to protect their future salary cap and to make it easier to "move him on".

So, how did that work out?

Even if you give Bruce Allen genius points for tossing in a few extra millions of dollars to "protect the cap" and also to relieve future teams from the burden of the stupid contract, what they got for Haynesworth was this:
12 games of half-assed effort
4 games of suspension with the rest of the team giving a sign of relief
An off-season of question marks about Haynesworth
A low-round draft pick.
Look at that record and tell me it was worth $21M - - or even $15M?

Would the Redskins be in worse shape today if they had simply released Haynesworth and not paid him a dime in April 2010? I really don't think so...
