On Brian Orakpo and holding

D.C. Sports Bog - On Brian Orakpo and holding

He would probably be leading the league in sacks if it weren't for all the holding.

Re: On Brian Orakpo and holding

I liked the idea of holding having an option for a loss of down penalty that someone else brought up, especially if it was done to prevent a sack.

Some of the non-calls are really bad, but as the article states, it probably could be called every play.

Orakpo or the coaches need to get more vocal with the officials, the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

I don't see Orakpo as the type to get in an official's face, but I certainly wouldn't mind Shanahan or Haslett doing it on his behalf. I hope to see Haynesworth get more play at DE next to Orakpo - that will certainly lead to more QB pressures and sacks.

Re: On Brian Orakpo and holding

Or he needs to start flailing when held and make it impossible to NOT call. Make it obvious, Rak. When teams have to stop holding because they're racking up hold calls...demolish their QB. He did this somewhat on the Columbo hold on the last play vs. Dallas.

I thought having the umpire as a second official in the backfield would increase the hold calls they catch, but that hasn't been the case yet. Orakpo is getting held around the throat on most plays.

The officials are doing a better job of containing him than opposing linemen.

Funny comment from the article: "Jason Peters was all like, 'Ocrapko!'"

From the article:

Quote:
"I never hold," center Casey Rabach told me. "It's against the rules. Obviously."

This IS obvious.

Making a deal out of it in the media is the best thing that acn be done. If he becomes the "Most Held Guy" in the NFL then officials will start to pay more attention to it. The last thing the league wants is Fox putting together montages of holds on Orakpo that they run in the middle of th 4th quarter every Sunday during a Skins game.

Ok, now lets go back and see how many times a Redskin O linemen did the same thing to stop a sack of McNabb? This is the same complaint every great pass rusher has had over the years ...Reggie White was held all the time,LT....go back and watch some of the old tapes of Joe Jacoby and LT...they have to fight their way through it.Orakpo is a great pass rusher he just needs to find a way though it.

May be my bias but I don't see it happen nearly as often on the Skins line.

Re: On Brian Orakpo and holding

Orakpo is so, SO good. No idea how we got him with the 13th overall pick in the draft, considering how scrutinized the process was.

Buffalo got to see all the tape on Orakpo at Texas, and STILL took Aaron Maybin (likely, though, that was a marketing-driven move instead of a football driven-move). And people are going to blame the coaching/quarterback situation for that team's struggles.
