I like the pick for system reasons (as well as potential). The Utah Jazz took Deron Williams over Chris Paul a few years ago- many were scratching their heads. Turns out the system method works (Paul is still a stud PG, though... just may not have fit Sloan's team).

Re: Shanahan: Williams is a natural for zone-blocking scheme

I wanted to just repost this because the similarities to Ryan Clady are interesting. I think the main difference is that Clady was a little taller with slightly longer arms. However at the same time both Wiliams and Clady were athletic types that were soft in the middle.
Quote:
Clady is also versatile, being able to play on the left or the right. With very good technique, he does needsto add strength especially on his lower body). He also needs to work harder in the weight room, as well as working on his run blocking mechanics.

Clady is a top ten talent. Although Jake Long is the top tackle prospect in this year's draft, Clady has the higher pro ceiling. He is a terrific athlete, but is still learning the position. On talent alone, he is above Joe Thomas (last year's top drafted tackle). A top pick for sure, Clady has the ability to contribute right away. He could anchor an offensive line for years.
Obviously the buzz words are highlighted but as you can see like Clady, Williams has the best upside, most athletic talent, he's versitle, and has had some problems in the weight room.

Honestly I was a little on the fence about Williams especially compared to Okung but seeing how favorably he compares to Clady makes me feel a lot better about the pick. Now I'm going to enjoy the screams of the "OKUNGGGGGGG!!!!!!!" tribe.

@itvnetop - Love your quote.

That was pretty cool. Like I said before I like "Gorilla" better (theres also a way to say it that I can't really articulate in text, I guess caveman is the best way to describe it.) as it seems to roll off the tongue but if he plays to his potential I'll call him whatever he wants to be called. Still I guess in the end it's just nice to know that we have a young Tackle.

In the meantime I will practice screaming "SILVERRRRBACKKKKK!" Also nice to know there will be no fines for the nickname.

Re: Shanahan: Williams is a natural for zone-blocking scheme

I felt if TW went anywhere, we would get the most production out of him, seeing how Shanahan turned Clady into an All-Pro. The kid might not be as motivated as Okung, but I think if the O-line coach can push him and he listens to Samuels he will be a better pro than Okung.

Re: Shanahan: Williams is a natural for zone-blocking scheme

Buffalo is w/o a plan at QB, might meet the price of a third rounder for Campbell.

I would, if I could, try to pick in both the 2nd and 3rd round. I think we can probably get high enough to get McCoy with that 2011 first rounder, and I'm thinking Campbell can probably net a third at this point.

Go from no picks tomorrow to two like that.

I personally felt that way about a lot of offensive players we were considering including Clausen and Bradford. Okung I felt was one of those few players along with McClain that I think will be successful no matter where they go. I hope that Suh and McCoy develop, as both of them are high character guys but DT's do have a high bust rate.

Yeah, I'm starting to feel better about this pick. Hope we can motivate this dude to hit the weight room and work his butt off. Maybe Shanahan & Allen will be able to slip in a bunch of incentives into the contract.

And we can still pick up free agents for left or right tackle and fill Williams in the other spot. Versatility is invaluable. Anyone for Flozell??

Maybe the Bills? They were heartbroken that Tebow went to Denver per Rich Eisen (sp?) They can still get McCoy or Clausen but can't be to high on them if they were really trying to trade into the 1st again to get Tebow.

Ehhh. Lets see if we can't get GTripp's guy, Edwin Veldheer (T Hillsdale) when we pick in the 4th.
