Riggins on Alstott

Riggo was the guest on Kornheiser this morning, the points I picked up:

1. Riggo thought Alstott wasn't in on the 2 pointer.
2. Alstott idolized Riggins growing up.
3. Alstott wanted to come to Washington to follow in Riggins footsteps.
4. The year Alstott was drafted he went in the 2nd round. It was the year we traded our 2nd and 3rd for Dallas's 1st and drafted some bum that never played a down.

Although he's not quite the back Riggins was, I would have been glad to see him with the Skins all this time.

Re: Riggins on Alstott

Good stuff. Alstott has been a nice player...but he is faaaaaaar from the RB that Riggo was.

Why is it that everyone in the world thought that 2 pointer was no good except for the only guy that mattered? frustrating...

Right now, I'd rather have Sellers than Alstott. Not taking anything away from Alstott....he's still an effective runner.

Thats funny I never heard anything about him wanting to get drafted by the Skins...

Re: Riggins on Alstott

I remember an article in some football mag a long time ago on Alstott where he said he loved Riggo and wanted to be a Redskin.

Actually, looking back at that draft...

http://www.drafthistory.com/years/1996.html

I know there is no sense looking back, but in addition to Alstott, the other choices available with that pick were:

35 Mike Alstott
36 Lawyer Milloy
43 Muhsin Muhammad
61 Brian Dawkins
80 Karim Abdul-Jabbar (just for the name)
86 Tedy Bruschi
89 Terrell Owens
154 Zach Thomas

though we did wind up with
13 Walt Harris

Kind of crazy that Stephen Davis didnt get picked until #102 overall, Round 4 pick 7.

He was one of best "steals" in our draft history...

We had the chance to draft them and we end up with Walt Harris? Boy did we get the short end of that stick.....

Re: Riggins on Alstott

We ended up with Walt Harris, but we didn't draft him that year. We just got him last year in free agency

Davis went into his senior year at Aubrun as a heisman canidate but they had a new coach who changed up the offense to a more spread like deal and he didn't have a good season like his past few. He ended up getting a bit banged up (surprise surprise) and consequently fell to the 4th round. It is noteworthy that he didn't become our go to guy until he got it by default when they Skins failed to lure a decent free agent. Of course in his first year as the feature back we make the playoffs for the first time since 91.

And our man Regan Upshaw was selected at no. 12.

So, what do you think. Would Gibbs have traded for Clinton Portis if Stephen Davis were still on the Redskins roster?
