Had to go with Franklin, I really like him. There's a reason many major college programs pursued him.

4 teams have asked to inteview Gruden per JLC. Skins, Vikings, Lions, Titans. So much for him drawing no interest.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

Of the guys listed I would rank:

1) Zimmer
2) Franklin
3) Gruden

While working with RGIII is a lot different than working with Andy Dalton, three consecutive play-offs where the offense ****s the bed against competition that isn't unbeatable for Jay Gruden scares me a little bit. Personally I would much prefer a defensively oriented head coach, our D has been too bad not to try that at this juncture. Franklin certainly interests me as well.

Who do we think is our biggest competition for Gruden?

Bevell. We can find a good DC (I say Greg Williams for 4-3, Wade Phillips if we stay 3-4). We will be defined by our offense (RG3 is the face of this franchise). Bevell runs the type of offense we need to run. Run heavy with a dynamic quarterback.

And, if you are one of those people who believes RG3 is a headcase, you should want him even more. He (as OC of the Vikings) was behind Brett Favre's best year even while Brett was a sideshow attraction.

I'm just guessing.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

I'm a bit interested. A lot of the defensive names the skins have been tied to are 4-3 type guys. Do you forsee us moving back to the 4-3? Personally, I think it would work better for us. I believe we have better fitting personnel for ther 4-3 right now. I'd like to see Orakpo and Kerrigan with their hand in the dirt and it makes ILB less of an immediate need with Riley playing well.

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

I said Gruden because:

1) I read a report that said that Bevell may have a coordinator's personality but not a HC's personality.

2) Zimmer is described as really blunt and honest. While I admire those qualities in people, his constellation of those traits may limit his important diplomatic moments as a HC

3) Franklin is tempting but may be too young, too unproven. He may need more seasoning before being an NFL HC.

4) The other folks don't excite me much.

My 2 cents.

The Titans are at the top of his list. I don't know if he's at the top of theirs

I'm pretty sure, from all I've heard, that Jay Gruden would want a 4-3 defense

Why did you say (elsewhere) that you were concerned about the staff he would assemble?

I haven't seen Pat Shurmur listed before as one of our candidates but this article says that he is:

Washington Redskins interested in Cincinnati Bengals assistants - ESPN

Re: Pick Your Next Redskins Head Coach

My thoughts are that any interview with NFC East candidates (present and former) (Fewell, Bisaccia, McDermott) is mostly just an informational purposes type of interview. That is, to find out how division rival teams scout the 'skins. From what I have read, this is a practice that many teams, who are looking to replace their head coach, will do during the interview process. I recognize that I could be very wrong on this, but if that's the case, I wouldn't put too much stock into the interviews with the above mentioned names.

Do we need to read into anything as to the exclusion of Ken Whisenhunt's name on this thread's poll or is he still a realistic possibility for Washington?

I'm thinking in terms of the top three - 1. Darrell Bevell 2. Jay Gruden 3. Jim Caldwell. That's who I think the front office wants to narrow the search down to - with James Franklin being the "dark horse" candidate. While I know people will point to that one really bad season in Indy for Caldwell, I think he's a great choice.
