What other languages can you speak?
There is nothing cooler than speaking one or more foreign languages. It's awesome right? I am so impressed when a friend drops some rapid fire foreign lingo out of the blue, whether it's your buddy shooting the breeze in Vietnamese at your favorite local Pho shop, your Venezuluan roommate arguing with his mom about Chavez, or your kid sister haggling in French (all things I've witnessed at various times). It's just so cool! And how about a member of the opposite sex coming at you with some non-English? Forget about it, so hot.
So anyway, from the bilingual like Smoot to the stuttering untalented dufus like myself, let's talk about languages we can speak, are learning to speak, or want to learn to speak. I studied Latin in high school and Spanish in college; unfortunately, I never really took either seriously as anything more than a required class, and have subsequently forgotten everything I learned. I have been living in Japan for over 2 years and studying Japanese that whole time. They say it's the toughest language in the world and well I don't know if that's true, I can't imagine anything being harder, what with its 3 alphabets and reversed grammar. But the more I study, the more I am able to communicate with people who I would never know anything about otherwise - which has been the most rewarding part of being over here. |
