I went to the wednesday 7pm practice...
At the 8/2 7pm practice:
-Everyone seemed to only care about seeing two players: Santana Moss and Jason Campbell. Large applause for them even on ho-hum boring plays. I found it a bit weird. -I was looking forward to seeing Saunders running all over the place after hearing all those reports, but he just stood still and didn't say much of anything the whole time. bummer. -The QBs still looked pretty average. No one stood out, though collins threw the checkdown immediately almost every time. Campbell did run once for yards, and he seems to be the most accurate of the bunch. Lots of high sailers though (quite a few of which were caught, surprisingly). Brunell had one horrifying throw though. After looking around, he threw it to the wide open checkdown (who was sitting still 5 yards away) and the ball dinked to the ground 6 feet from where it was released. Total duck :/. Collins also had an INT i believe. He sucks. -Santana Moss and Marcus Washington were on today. Unlike the first day, Moss didn't drop anything, made some great catches (while staying in bounds and making jump-catches), and was generally not dogging it. Washington got to the QB quite a bit and was back to jumping around after plays. He absolutely smoothered cooley in coverage the one or two times they lined up. Brunell threw it to him anyways, and it ended up rolling harmlessly on the ground. -Lloyd and Cooley also had some great catches. Both had to get up though, since QBs seemed to be sailing a lot of balls. Espy and thrash looked pretty decent again. Lloyd looks like a real WR that could put up around 800-1000 yards with a couple good catches a game. -Randle El didn't look so hot. he didn't look terrible either, but telling his performance from greats such as Jimmy Farris would have been tough today. Very average. Carlos was able to cover him pretty well too. -Taylor Jacobs watch: Once again TJ showed little heart or extra effort, immediately slowing down after the play was done instead of running it out like ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE ELSE. He had a lot of drops compared to even the no-name campbait, and muffs on the punt catching drills. He rarely got open in 11 on 11. I don't know how he could make the roster. -Running backs: Portis got about 2 carries in two hours, both of which were outside tosses that went a long ways. That play has gone for big yards almot every time it's been run in camp, so i'm not sure what's up with the defense on that one. Ladell looked good, breaking some tackles and mainly going up the middle. No complaint there. In offense only drills both Portis and Cartwright threw HB option passes. -Rock Cartwright got most of the RB work today (for some reason) and did fairly well. No fumbles, no real negative plays, but nothing amazing either. -Lumsden also got a TON of work (for a #4/#5/#6 type) and got stuffed a lot. I'm not sure it was really his fault, since campbell had to dive on a snap and the 2nd string OL was basically a turnstile on most of his plays. at 6'2" 235lbs and a 4.4, you really do want him to do well, but i couldn't see anything of note besides the stuffs. Daseal said he played better the first day. -Tyler Jones (kicker) and John Hall both looked okay kicking FGs, but hall had a bunch come out with a very low trajectory and neither one of the guys was trying anything over 35 yards. David Lonnie (aussie punter) and ethan albright (LS) basically stood around the whole time doing nothing. Derrick Frost practiced holding for Hall a bit, but neither punter actually kicked anything. I did notice that most (like 80%) of the routes in offense only and some of the scrimmage drills were just having the WRs run straight downfield and then break towards the sideline to catch it after the ball had been thrown (they only had about 3 steps till they hit the sideline). Must have been working on the timing, cause that was basically all they ran. Moss ended up in the fan section right near me after one sideline grab, since he couldn't slow down soon enough. It must suck to be that fast . |
