Mecury News - Starting QB a job few can hold down
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercu...s/14408858.htm
A year ago today, the 49ers used the first pick in the NFL draft to select a quarterback as sharp as he was skilled. Alex Smith graduated from college in two years with a degree in economics and made mincemeat of the Wonderlic Personnel Test. Then the NFL made mincemeat of Smith. His rookie season produced one touchdown, 11 interceptions and two victories. Longtime football watchers weren't surprised. Playing quarterback in the NFL isn't brain surgery. It's harder. The skill set required to be an effective pro quarterback -- physical talent, mental aptitude, emotional resilience and leadership ability -- is exceedingly rare. There are approximately 52 million men in the United States between the ages of 20 and 44, but only 21 had commendable passer ratings last season. ``More college teams are throwing the ball these days, and so many guys look like pro quarterbacks. Then they get to the next level, and it doesn't pan out for them,'' Hall of Famer Dan Fouts said. Is it Football season yet? |
