Richie Petitbon To Enter Ring Of Fame

Former Redskins Defensive Coordinator Richie Petitbon To Enter ‘Ring Of Fame’ - Redskins Journal

ASHBURN – The Washington Redskins announced Thursday that Richie Petitbon, who served as the team’s defensive coordinator for all three Super Bowl victories, will be added to the “Ring of Fame” at FedEx Field at halftime of their game against Minnesota on Dec. 24.

Petitbon, a former player who took over as the secondary coach in 1978, was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1981 and served in that role under Joe Gibbs until succeeding him as head coach in 1993. Petitbon went just 4-12 that season before being fired in favor of Norv Turner.

Petitbon, 73, was a four-time Pro Bowler as a safety for the Chicago Bears from 1959-68 and played for the Los Angeles Rams in 1969 and 1970 before spending his final two seasons with the Redskins.

The Redskins have honored 44 former players, coaches and others with ties to the team since beginning the program with the opening of FedEx Field in 1997. The last to be memorialized was former running back and return specialist Brian Mitchell, who was honored on Oct. 26, 2009.
