Agree 100%.

As to the long kicks, I have a question:

With the relatively new rule that after a missed FG, the kick goes to the point of the spot of the kick, I think this changes the calculus of some of these 48+ yard kicks.

If you add 17 yards to the line of scrimmage for each kick (about 7 yds for the spot and 10 yds for the posts), a snap from the 32 gives a 49 yard kick.

If you miss, the other team starts on the 39, which is (a) good position, following (b) a momentum shifter that results from missing a kick after a drive.

So picture this.

You are at the 32.

It's fourth down.

If it is less than three yards, if you go for the first and miss, you give up the ball around the 31, but you tried. They have worse field position than if you try the 3.

If you make it, it's a momentum builder.

Clearly, the other parameters are time remaining, score, etc., but I feel that there is a higher probability of missing the three than making the first at some point (2 yds or less?).

Am I just over thinking this?
