Star Telegram - Redskins nail win with 47-yard field goal
Star-Telegram.com | 11/05/2006 | Redskins nail win with 47-yard field goal
LANDOVER, MD - It was wild, dramatic and bizarre. How else would you describe the final moments at FedEx Field Sunday when in a matter of 35 seconds the Cowboys went from the brink of losing to the euphoria of winning to total devastation and a 22-19 loss to the rival Washington Redskins? Washington kicker Nick Novak began the crazy turn of events when he was wide right on a 49-yard field goal attempt. Four plays later, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo completed a 17-yard pass to tight end Jason Witten on third down, setting up what could have been a game-winning 35-yard field goal by kicker Mike Vanderjagt with 6 seconds left. But that was before Redskins safety Troy Vincent knifed inside Witten and blocked the kick. And before Redskins safety Sean Taylor’s 30-yard return. And before 15 more yards were added on to the end of the play because of a face mask penalty on guard Kyle Kosier, giving the Redskins one last play with no time left on the clock. Novak barely made the kick from 47 yards out, but the inconceivable result is all that mattered. “It’s a heartbreaker,” Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said. “We just had to execute on the play. We didn’t do it. It’s a tough pill to swallow. To get a shot at winning and then to have it reverse itself is really disheartening.” |
