Is this franchise capable of selecting our quarterback in this years draft? I like Mike Shanahan as our coach and he will need time to make this team a winner. So lets not blame Mike for our failures in drafting a franchise quraterback, this is been going on way to long.
That's right.

Look, it doesn't do a lot of good to look back at the past and let it shape the future. But there is a lesson in this thread, and that lesson was that if you think the Redskins drafting a quarterback in the first round and hoping that guy would make all their other personnel decisions look good would represent the new way of doing stuff, that's not really the case. It would be more like the same thing the Redskins have been doing since 1994.

1st round QBs drafted by the Redskins since 1991: 3
1st round QBs drafted by the Packers since 1991: 1
1st round QBs drafted by the Patriots since 1991: 1

Number of QBs drafted by the Redskins since 1991 who are currently in pro football: 2
Number of QBs drafted by the Packers since 1991 who are currently in pro football: 4
Number of QBs drafted by the Patriots since 1991 who are currently in pro football: 4

Contrary to popular belief, the teams with the best quarterback play in the NFL do not typically invest the most draft value into quarterbacks. If they dabble in the first round, they typically do it only once.

Good points.

Imo a bad franchise cannot produce a 'franchise' QB, I don't care how good the prospect.
There are certain elements that need to be in place from an organizational stand point to support the development and success of a young QB into a 'franchise' QB i.e. personnel (LT, RB, OL, WR, defense) coaching (someone that knows QBs and knows how to install an NFL passing game) front office (someone that has a clear vision and plan towards the future).
Its why the same QB can look like terrible with one team yet look like a HOFer with another team.

I think its also important that to sometimes look at the individual teams that make up the group when it comes to QB success.

The prevailing logic based on the stats is that the higher you draft a QB the better the odds of success.

But if you look at the good franchises and the team with bona fide or even perceived QB 'guru' they tend to have success with their QBs regardless of how or where they acquire them and most were acquired outside the top 10 picks in the 1st round.

I'm doing the list below from memory:

Walsh never drafted a QB in the 1st round
Holmgren: has produced more starting caliber QBs then most franchises and he's never drafted a QB in the 1st round
Bellichick IIRC no 1st round QB, produced a starting QB from a 7th round pick
Andy Reid: has drafted the highest but also produced Kolb a 2nd rounder into a starter and turned Vick into a top 10 passer
Sean Peyton: Tony Romo UDFA and Drew Brees via FA
McCarthy: late 1st round and now Matt Flynn
Shananhan: has only drafted 1 Cutler at 11 (IIRC) and produced pro-bowlers with 3rd round Greise and FA Plummer

I'm sorry but I don't buy all of this "let's look at the past" crap. It doesn't matter, and it's straight up irrelevant. Their isn't some sort of Redskins god that dictates whether or not we will successfully draft a franchise QB or that Mike Shanahan gets a pass because no other regime was able to draft a franchise QB.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

I'd like to see the ratio of SB winning QBs who were drafted by the team they won it with versus aquisitions.

Re: Redskins Have Not Had Success On Drafting Quarterbacks

I guess when the free agencey period starts this may determine what direction we will be going if we sign someone like Orton or Flynn. I just don't know if the Redskins will have enough ammo to move up to the 2nd pick with the Rams. I think our biggest threat to draft RGIII is the Browns. How much should we give up to ensure we get RGIII or just let the chips fall and see if he is still their when we pick at #6. I like RGIII he seems to be a great kid with freakish athletic talent but will that make him a franchise quarterback or even a middle of the pack QB like Jason Campbell. I still think we should have kept Jason Shannahans 1 season instead of trading for McNasty. Oh well I will look back at this thread and read what has been posted to see how it all unfolds in the coming months. Lets hope and pray we find a QB who can lead this team for the next 5-8 years.
