Craziest Local Delicacy?

So I out at my favorite restaurant the other day and was eating some of my favorite collard green cakes and it got me thinking..."I wonder where else in the country this exists?"

There's also this restaurant that's a three store chain around here called Kenny's. Best fried chicken you've ever had in your life. They have something called a "Sauceburger". My wife and I both think the sauce is basically a mixture of ketchup, mustard and relish but we can NEVER get it right at home.

What is something totally unique that you eat that might just be in your area?

I guess for the ones that don't know they are Big Balls and yes I have had them. Its been a long time ago and I had no clue what I was eating but from what I remember they where pretty good. One of my parents best friend owned a hugh pig farm in Smithfield and he cooked them at a SB party. If I remember correctly they tasted like meat.

No one noticed my typo and I typed "Big Balls" instead of "Pig Balls".

Hahaha. Nice... Not to be nasty but I would expect more "pop" when you eat them.

Clam Cakes are very popular in RI where I grew up. They are kind of like hush puppies but with clam in them. They are actually really good.

I also love scrabble but that seems to be everywhere now a days.

Re: Craziest Local Delicacy?

Garbage Plates Anyone? Thats a pretty "Rochester, NY" type thing, although I have seen it in the area.... pretty much the most unhealthy thing, but greatest thing on earth...

Take your pick, two hot dogs/hamburgers put on top of a combination of mac salad/baked beans/homefries/french fries (your choice of two) than topped with oninons/ketchup/mustard and MEAT hot sauce... if you dont have meat hot sauce, you really have not lived... I've heard its pretty much a local thing, but has anyone else had these?

Steamed cheeseburgers are kind of a big deal around here. I'd never heard of them before I moved up here, but there's a place called Ted's that has pretty awesome steamed cheeseburgers.

Anyone else ever had turtle soup?

Not really a delicacy, but kind of a local flavor that you can't find anywhere.

Roy's place in Gaithersburg. Over 200 different kinds of sandwiches. Sadly, Roy passed away a few months ago, but the place still carries on the tradition.

Check out the menu...

Roy's Menu -- Featuring Over 200 Unique Sandwiches

One of the sandwiches is

A Good Cold Sandwich

"Two stale heels of bread enclosing a freshly-made ice cube"

Roy died? That's awful. Roy's place is an institution in Gaithersburg.

I had one of those a while back and I think it was definitely up in New England. Gives it a TOTALLY different texture. Delicious.

And Gmanc, you've told me about those before, and I want one of those for breakfast every single day.

We have a local place in Saratoga called PJ's BBQ and they have garbage plates, but they give proper credit to the Rochester area on the menu.

Re: Craziest Local Delicacy?

A buddy of mine lived in Hilton Head for a while, and I used to drive up from Florida every summer and visit. Anyway, there was this awesome breakfast place down the street from his house called Skillets. They had a platter called The Kitchen Sink. It had everything except, well, the kitchen sink. Eggs, sausage, pancakes, bacon, hash browns... it was awesome. Great hangover food.
