Re: John Madden retires

Might Madden be on Davis' mind?

Anybody think this could happen? How do you think he would do?

Re: John Madden retires

i cant see the old man coming back for the grind of a long season. plus, the N.F.L is totally different from when he coached.

Re: John Madden retires

I don't think it would be in coaching. Maybe a front office position?

And good morning D. Raining up your way?

Re: John Madden retires

I think he's already ruled out taking on any sort of front office position.

Shameless self-promotion. It is what it is.

Thus he broke the arcane minutiae of professional football down into terms that your grandmother and mailman could understand, and this made him the biggest show in town in the 80's.

The problem is, members of my generation have been playing video games and obsessing over ESPN and internet statistics all of our lives, and as a result have a level of understanding of the game that would have been impossible for anyone not working in it 25 years ago. So we don't need to be spoken to as if we are 6 years old watching our first game with pops, who is trying to teach us the rules. That's why I think younger people were often so annoyed by Madden, who seemed to assume that they knew jack about the game.

In many ways Collinsworth is the antithesis of this. He assumes that his audience knows almost as much about football as he does, and usually he's right. Don't get the hate for him in this thread at all, I'm really looking forward to hearing him with Michaels next year.
Hold on a minute, lemme grab my thesaurus. Kidding

I agree, Madden's style became antiquated with our generation, and he did not have the effect that he had on the generation before us. While I can appreciate his legendary status, I think his inability to conform to the times did him in.

Collinsworth will be OK, I guess, but I was looking for a much flashier signing, like Prime Time.

He was simplitic and that was definitely his appeal that he could break things down for the average fan. But I found he was also able to talk things up to the more educated fan at times, and he often had some pretty astute observations and insight. Personally I just loved the guy's passion. You could really tell that he loved football, just like us.

I think the hate towards CC comes from how he comes off a little pompous, he's the anti-Madden. And I honestly don't see where he's that knowledgeable or where he brings anything groundbreaking to the broadcast booth. I'm sure he'll be alright, I don't watch the games for who's in the booth, but given a choice I'd rather have Madden.
