Cool where the Portis haters?

couple weeks ago, tons of you were crying for Champ, saying Portis was overrated, too small, just a part of Denver's system etc. etc. this is a call for rations of crow from all y'all and a call for recognition of our MVP on that side of the ball.

Not here. I've said all along I will take Portis with Springs at CB all day.Over Champ at CB and Trung Canadate at RB.

not only is Portis turning out to be as incredible as we all hoped, but what I love best is that the rest of the world is finally finding out what us Skins fans have known for years: that Champ Bailey is the most overrated player in the NFL.

The contract we offered Champ would have made him the highest paid corner in the league, and that wasn't enough for the self-proclaimed best corner in football. He needed to approach sixty mil.

Then I saw him on Jim Rome's show knocking Smoot and Springs, saying "those guys can cover, but they ain't me!" Whatever, they are both playing at least equal to him this year. He also said that he didn't care about the losing in Washington, he was just trying to get paid. That certainly encapsulates what kind of person and player Chump Bailey is. Whatever Champ, nobody misses you around here. We got the best d in the league without you.

All this being said, I could still go for that second round pick back....

Whatever, let him bash Smoot and Springs. I'll tell you right now that if you put Smoot and Bailey in front of me. Told me I had to pick one to be the Washington Redskins CB opposite Shawn Springs for the next 10 years, I would take Smoot without even thinking about it. Whatever Champ, you didnt want to be hear, dont talk sh*t about our guys.

War Portis taking a crack at 1500
War Smoot resinging soon

I like Portis, but last week he proved he WAS a system back. He didn't do that well in Gibbs' offense. We start using Denveressque blocking schemes and he has a huge game. Imagine that, Joe Gibbs actually wised up and worked to Clinton's forte.

I agree, too bad he cant put in the jacksonville offense from 8 yrs ago and make Brunell start playing like he did then

I do recall some people bashing on Portis a bit, I'm too lazy to look it up though.

I don't think it's as easy as saying we changed up the offense for him and now he's running well. We definitely added some wrinkles here and there, but it's not an entirely different system than we started the year off with.

Portis needed time to get used to the offense and get adjusted to a new line.

Everything seems to be coming together for him now. He's definitely not a system back.

Imagine that, Gibbs adapting his offense to his player's strengths. Not changing it wholeheartedly, but adding wrinkles, as Matty pointed out. Seems I've seen someone on this site repeatedly calling Gibbs too old and stubborn to change

You're right illdefined. There were several people on this site who made those comments. But I'm not going to be the one to call them out.

I love Portis, think he's one of the top backs in the league. His cutback ability in the open field is unbelievable.

But I thought about what you wrote in another thread and I think you're right, I think maybe we do take him for granted. Maybe it is because we come to expect it, I don't know. It's almost like the complaint we make about the Hall of Fame snubbing of Art Monk. It seems like his career has been taken for granted because day in and day out he just did his job as was expected. No excitement, no flamboyance, just a consistent, reliable performer.

It's the same way with Portis, though he has flair. You know he'll show up so it's only a big deal when he doesn't

Smootsmack, we've abandonned the old Gibbs style of football as far as the power running game (thank god) and it was a good move by him. Now, if he can switch the QBs Ill be a happy man.

I've questioned if Portis was a system back or not. One thing you can't say is he doesn't try. The guy's dedicated to winning. Gotta love it. I think he'll break 1500 this year and be in the top 3 rushing. Hopefully he can get more than 2 TDs and 1 throwing in the 2nd half of the season.

Here I am, as I said from the day we traded for him my biggest concern was he was a system back, I also said he couldn't play conventional Gibb's smash mouth football, I felt he would have success running the counter trey, because you can read and react but not even that worked, we put in some zone blocking as I said we should do because it suit's Portis's running ability, and guess what? We did, and Clinton is running again, great job by Gibb's and Buge's implimenting those blocking schemes on the fly and relativly quick I might add, I do believe that he is far more than a system back at this point, very few back's could do what he does in that system even though he need's that type of blocking scheme to be successful, he's far better than anyone denver has I don't care what kind of number's they put up, after watching him yesterday I have to say I believe we got the better end of the deal for Champ, I alway's maintained Champ is good not great, Clinton in this system can be great and if he stay's healthy I believe he will be a great RB for us, so eating crow is really not on the menu for those of us who insisted [dasael] and a few other's who understood what he needed to be a success for us, the fact that he's now having success as soon as we change the blocking for him only reinforces our assessment of him.
