Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

I must say that it must be impossible to trade in this draft. If that is the case then I am a little less upset about our pick.

I really thought that Miami would be all over trading up and I was absolutely floored when they took Ginn.

The thing that worries me the most about Landry is that we now have two guys who are head hunters and that could be both good and bad.

I guess it all depends on how our D line shakes out.

Well I thought they would have gone D-Line but Landry is a great player. My quesion is who should the Skins target in free agency to bolster the D Line and guard? The only name I see that keeps coming up in posts is Ian Scott? Is there anyone else out there that can help?

As far as guard - isn't Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack still available? He reminds me of Dockery a little in being a road grader type of guard.

Yuo know in order to trade up or down, you have to have a trade partner that you can work out a compatible deal with. Not as easy as many people seem to think, it's not an automatic, we're at the 12th pick now and there has not been a trade yet. I just hope we can address some of the other needs we have with trades, early cuts, or later round DP and UD FA.

I was in the Gaines Adam or Alan Branch camp because I thought we needed to upgrade our defensive line, BUT drafting Landry will really improve our passing defense and we can now concentrate our 2nd day picks on picking up d-linemen. We've now got two safeties who are pretty interchangeable, and a ton of depth in the secondary with Fox, Prioleau. This pick will make ST even more dangerous, because now you don't know who is coming or staying back, and both guys can cover and hit.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

Well, when we first picked Landry, I was FURIOUS that we didnt trade down. I thought everything worked out perfectly for us.... now seeing how the draft is going; I can't be mad at the Skins' for not trading down, they really had no partners.

As far as Landry...I really wanted to go defensive line. I just think we needed a defensive end, and I would have liked to take Anderson or Okoye. Now part of me (now that its over) am glad we didnt get a DT, because we have Griffin and two guys we drafted last year who I think can be quite good. I'm not estatic, but after seeing that we really couldnt trade down, I'm not as dissapointed as I was initially, I thought I was going to cry.

If Landry doesn't work out I'm gonna get a LOT of angry Private Messages in three years.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

went back and read a tues wash post article on landry, seems some other nfc execs/scouts dont think landry is cerebral or football knowledgable enough . . . pairing him with ST might be bad idea having two of the same type players, might hurt STs development (probaly the most certain negative sideeffect of adding a rook safety) . . . go skins

Well, you would think ... but don't be so sure. Watch them take a tight end, a receiver, an offensive guard. It would be a small miracle if they are able to find anyone in the 5th round who could make an impact no matter where they pick.

This front office just doesn't like to take defensive linemen high in the draft.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

What people don't realize is that a good secondary = sacks. Our D- line looked so bad last year because our secondary couldn't cover my grandma (and she runs a 4.9 40), and quarterbacks were making quick throws. The D Line wasn't great, but it wasn't as nearly as bad as it looked. We can pick up some veterans later. Landry is solid at 6, he was the best on the board.

WHAT!! The skins have 8 CB/SS/FS. Why is a team that had 19 sacks all last year and one of the worst run defenses in the league. Drafting a safety. Skins need help on the Dline. Bad Pick

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

Given that they didn't have a trade partner, they took the highest rated D player on their board. Now maybe they didn't evaluate talent correctly (a serious possibility with this group, no doubt) but given that, they made a responsible move as a FO.

Plus, it's clear that Williams believes that the key to his D is proper effective safety play. Now he's got great young talent there. As for the D line, let's hope they can pick up a decent late rounder or late FA to bolster things, and maybe if our LBs and Safeties can play ball properly, our D-line will look better. It's not impossible that bad secondary and LB play made the line look worse... (obviously, this is not conventional wisdom, but perhaps that what GW and co think--and he did have top-10 Ds for us).

A responsible pick--not flashy. That's pretty good from this bunch. And I assume that no one wanted to trade down with us, which is what we all really wanted.

Re: The Official 2007 Draft Discussion Thread

What makes anyone think that just because you draft a D-lineman that it solves our problems? The fact is not 1 of these guy's had the talent that M. Williams had coming out last year, not as fast, not as strong, not as tall, and look at what kind of a difference he made for Houston. My feeling on these lineman is that they are not impact type lineman, which would leave us in the same position next year, but with Landry I believe barring injury we are set at the safety position for a long time.

The only player who I wouldn't have had a problem with at #6 at DL was Anderson, but there wasen't a ton of film on him to really get a feel for him, but he may be the 1 player that got away. On the other hand none of these guys are S. Merriman in whom I wanted 2 years ago. When it's all said I believe we drafted a difference maker in Landry, I don't believe the other top Lineman are.
