Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
I was interested to learn who was responsible. The article does seem to imply that this is Danny's doing. I wonder what kind of authority Gibbs has when Danny wants to do something.

WE ALL AGREE THIS IS BAD!!! can we do anything to stop this? theres gotta be something, i cant sit by and watch my team make another bad decision. its almost like having another little sister dude

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Ok, so let's step back and look at this trade. I don't have a problem with getting Briggs, and drop from #6 to #31 may not be a total disaster if someone is there at D-Line (I know they have shown interest in Quentin Moses, but #31 may be a little high for him)
But a.) we need more picks and b.) are we committed to Rocky or not? But does anyone else find it weird that Snyder would even comment at all?

We definately need more picks, it appears that we are not comitted to Rocky at all, and this whole thing is strange and incredibly aggravating.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
This thread is actually very humorous...
First of all, whenever the Skins have someone they need to trade or cut, someone here thinks that they ought to trade him for a 2nd round or a 1st round pick. Any Skins' player - no matter how surplus he is to this team or how marginal his skills are - is worth a high draft pick. Now the Skins are rumored to be interested in a guy who has already shown he is a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker. To get him, the Skins need not give up a pick; all they have to do is switch positions in the first round to get him. But now, the Pro Bowl player isn't enough for folks here unless the Bears ALSO throw in a couple of other picks too. Say what? Suppose - JUST SUPPOSE - the guy the Skins take at #6 turns out to be as effective as some of their other high first round picks have been. Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, that "Heisman Trophy receiver" who turned out to be a punt returner, or Rod Gardner to name a couple. Wouldn't a Pro Bowl linebacker look awfully good in exchange for one of those guys? Now here's why I would NOT make the deal - and it has nothing to do with getting additional picks from the Bears. The Bears play a completely different defense than the Skins do. That's why Adam Archuletta might actually be useful to them. Briggs will have to learn what to do in a completely different system - - and we saw how easy that was for Archuletta, right? Briggs will command - no he will DEMAND - a huge payday to come here and he'll come here needing to learn a whole new defense. I would not pay a huge salary and lose draft position for that kind of risk. But if you just look at the rumored trade for what it is, a Pro Bowl linebacker is worth a switch in first round positions. What's your higher draft pick going to do? Go to the Pro Bowl? Hell, Briggs has already been there and done that... Let's see, suppose the Raiders have an interest in Ade Jimoh for their secondary. Of course the Skins should get the overall #1 pick in this year's draft for Jimoh plus a third rounder this year and next year's first round pick. That would be fair... :thumb:

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Not worried at all. This is a bad trade. We might have overpaid recentley with regards to draft picks, but this is just silly. Snyder does not make these calls anymore. Everybody in the organization has been told to act crazy and no one has a clue what we are doing.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Linebacker? Please. Remember when we had the best LB corp in the world with LaVar, Trotter and Armstead? Linebackers can be had. Why not just wait a year if you really want Briggs anyway? Isn't he signed to a one year contract? If JG pulls the trigger on this deal he has truly lost it.

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
SC,
It's not just the trade values that people are concerned with (and I think that there are reasons to be concerned), it is also the fact that the D-line is our biggest area of need, but Briggs doesn't play DE or DT. On a related note, I think people are concerned that a great DT/DE is worth more than a great OLB to any defense. Granted, Briggs is a proven OLB whereas draft prospects are not, but Briggs might look a little better in Chi-town than he would in D.C. given the talent he is surrounded by in Chicago. So, scheme issues aside, how good will Briggs be (or appear) on a team with less talented company? Who knows. I think people are also concerned about Briggs' contract demands. Briggs is likely seeking more than $15M in guaranteed money on a deal averaging about $6-$7M per year. Vernon Davis, last year's 6th overall pick, got a 5 year $23M deal, so we're probably looking at a 5 year deal worth no more $30M this year for a DT/DE (who, in FA, are a lot pricier than DTs/DEs). Finally, I think people are miffed because they expected us to trade down from the 6th pick to acquire a 2nd or 3rd rounder. By trading for Briggs, we obviously lose out on such a swap (assuming it would have been available). |

Re: NFL Network: Bears' Briggs, 31st Pick for Skins' 6th Pick?
Briggs is a great player, but I think the reason that people are reacting as negatively as they are is that this deal represents another attempt to shortcut the draft process by bringing in guys who were groomed in other people's systems. It appeared that we finally had learned our lesson and were committed to maximizing both this and future drafts, and then we here that, once again, we are interested in bringing in the next big name. If we are going to drop that far down in draft position it should not be to add another probowler to maybe our deepest position, but to pick up later round picks who can provide the depth that we so sorely lack.
I can't help but think there is something very fishy here, and I will be shocked if this actually happens. But if it does, well, here we go again. |
