Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
This new restraint is welcome. I cant help but think that in a few years when we are winning our second straight superbowl we'll look back on this offseason, after the disasterous free agency of signings of last year, as the point at which they learned their lesson and things began to turn.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
Davis got $49.6 million, $18.75 guaranteed, with $24 million in the first 3 years. They overpaid so much. He's not even that good.

I agree that our financial situation forced us from doing a great deal in free agency. It's not that we didn't want too, we had to do what we could afford. There were a couple more targets we had our eye on, but they fortunately were priced out of our range. I'm going to hold my breath now and see what we do with this draft. Are we going to trade away our future like we have constantly done in the past or are we going to make smart moves geared toward the future. So far we still have all our draft choices for next year, will that remain, and we begin building the team the conventional way, or will we revert back to trading away the future for a quick fix now. After the draft, I'll have a better idea as to whether we're heading in the right direction or not.

Re: Davis to Cowboys....
What did you want our front office to do? They have done exactly what we have all complained about them not doing in the past. True, we didn't have alot of cap room, but we still picked up good quality players for the amount of cap room we had, which translates into good moves in the offseason. I'm sure if you look at the NFL as a whole you will realize that the Redskins aren't doing anything different than what other NFL franchises are doing.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
A question we still get a compensation pick for the loss of Dockery right? If so is it based where he was drafted, what he is going to make or what? Where do you think the pick will be?

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
Compensatory picks are not automatic. Usually they are given to teams currently in the league's graces (like Denver and Philadelphia). It will be for the 2008 draft and likely not any higher than a sixth rounder.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
Actually there's a formula for comp picks. URAs lost - UFAs signed. There are other details like where the guy was drafted I believe. At this point we would 0 since we signed two and lost two.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
But the processes used to determine the quality of FA signed vs lost are highly subjective and not standardized at all. In the past, Denver lost picks as a penalty for being over the cap during their SB run, only to be handed them back as compensatory picks. Very shady business.

I think it is more misunderstood than shady.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
Possibly. That one instance was shady at least. Maybe I'm just projecting that to the entire process.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....
well, the doors are closed on the meeting that decided who gets what, but # of FAs lost/number gained and contract values of all those FAs comes into play, and whom among them were starters.
we might get a very very late 7th, if something insane happens a very late 6th. don't hold your breath. right now, doc is out (50mill) but smoot and fletcher are in (50mill), so i'd guess we get nothing at all. |
