Portis is playing ... Backup
As if we needed another reason to hype the opening game.... Portis will back up Betts most likely according to Gibbs.
Imagine portis coming in on 3rd down and breaking a big run. I am going to crazy if that happens. ESPN.com - NFL - Reverse run? Gibbs says Portis will be backup in opener

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
Agreed.. I dont want to risk him if hes not fully healthy.. I hope this injury will be fully behind him come the Cowboys game.

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
This seems like a good situation, IMO. Portis will get some carries to help get back into game shape, but won't really have to worry about carrying the bulk of the team's production.
I hope Betts and Duckett look so good that Portis won't even need to touch the field, just so he's 100% for dallas.

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
according to last year, the vikings run defense wasnt that bad. only allowed 3 running backs to gain 100 yards against them

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
I think portis is playing possum with all of us. Alot of people seem to think that we signed duckett because the portis injury is worse than what has been reported. I think the signing of duckett is all about the goal line situations and the 3 or 4 and short. Portis' shoulder will be a question mark all season and duckett is in here for those potential situations. Why use a pickup with a plow when you have a dump truck with a plow on it. Its a pretty simple use of physics. It takes more to slow down a dump truck than lets say a high performace pickup like the ford lightning

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
I think this makes no sense at all. If he is ready to go turn him loose. If this is a decoy so Minny has to plan for him, that is fine. But if there is any doubt, hold him out until next week.

I really don't know what to think at this point to be honest. And I guess that's what they want the Vikings to think too. Mission accomplished.

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
Why do they list Portis and Springs on the starting line up when they know they aren't starting, or is that just standard practice?

Re: Portis is playing ... Backup
I just dont see the importance of Portis playing at less than 100%, especially a non divisional game, and the 1st game of the year. I would much rather him take the time off, come back against a very stiff Dallas rush defense. I know its Monday night, the 1st game, but you dont go to playoffs, or win the division in the 1st week. Portis being healthy for 15 games is more important than playing week 1. my opinion!
