Different era's, can't compare. If he played in today's NFL? Probably not.

He had one year where his TD’s were more than his int’s and completed 50 percent of his passes for his career. Absolutely not. But he was a movie star quarterback and won a superbowl for the Jets so…

Compare him to his peers though, his numbers were still not good. More Ints than td’s in 11 out of 12 years? Thats awful.
Jonny U, Fran Tarkenton, etc.

As for Eli, I cannot put him
In based on rings that his defense won. I dont even think rings should have anything to do with it. Marino is obviously a hall of famer. Dilfer is obviously not.
Rings have too much to do with circumstance and situation which is completely beyond their control. Put Dan Marino on the 2000’s Giants team with that D and he certainly wins a couple. Put Eli on those Dolphins teams he wins zero and they probably dont even sniff playing in one. You have to look at career numbers.

So when you say career numbers are you talking about regular season only? Because the postseason counts too when talking about a career resume. And fair or not it's going to be weighed more heavily especially when you win 2. Everyone knows Marino was a brilliant QB who was stuck on mostly mediocre teams. And everyone knows Dilfer was a terrible QB who played with one of the best all time defenses. There's context to everything.

And everyone knows that the Giants defense was the reason those Super Bowls were won so that context matters too.

No, he was a member of the 1987 team. Look at the guy in the Redskins sweater next to Gibbs signaling in the plays. He was on IR.

Absolutely post season numbers need to be and should be considered. You cant take away those games, but playing postseason games normally means you have a good coach, gm, owner, defense, weapons, etc. So guys like Marino, Stafford, etc are just unfortunate they were drafted by who they were drafted by.

What Im saying is you cannot simply say “eli won two super bowl mvp’s he is definitely in”. That is nonsense. Yes absolutely context to everything.
At the end of the day I think HOF careers rise to the surface regardless of championships or situations. My comments were really focused on Elis situation. There is no way he is even in the conversation if he played on a team like Marino.

Exactly. Throwing for 4,000 + yards in the 60's was a serious accomplishment.
