Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

My hopes are that he is truly capable of handling football again, and that he sticks on as the backup QB and mentor for Haskins, even if for one or two more years before trading him if he doesn't retire. Yes, he's an expensive backup, but if he can really help Haskins turn into a true franchise QB for the next 12 years like he helped Maholmes, it's probably worth the price.

If he has to come in to win a game, that would be an amazing thing to watch.

I too have the same fears as most people about him playing full-time.

With any luck, he'll end up a coach for us in some capacity. (QB Coach!?)

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Yeah, someone may have had to stand there all day to get that throw combo so they could tweet it out.

I can show you countless AMAZING Haskins throws from this offseason.

Alex COULD come back and take the job. I don't expect it Week 1. He needs to see what his leg does in real football action at full speed, against defenders. His arm looks great, but there's a lot more to this comeback than being able to throw. A lot of Smith's success came from his ability to run, escape and improvise. He was a much better runner than given credit for.

I hope he can actually win a roster spot. Guys saying he should retire should consider that if he does come back, even as #2, he'll have earned the spot and been cleared by docs to compete, and will have won a spot against competition, not from being treated special. Can't see RR ever letting a roster spot go to a guy through sympathy or purely for financial reasons. Good luck to him.

Not to mention the injury ... as gruesome as it was ... was so bad because of the infection which is not something that lingers. He is at no more risk to break that leg at this point than anyone else.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

I thought this was interesting

Alex Smith needs brace to aid movement of his foot, per his physician

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

The best thing about Alex Smith is that he is a FANTASTIC MENTOR. He will help tutor Haskins as he did in Kansas City with Mahommes. I hope he makes the #2 QB spot and can push and mentor Dwayne. But everyone will be holding their breath whenever there is pressure on Alex.

Re: Alex Smith’s Amazing Comeback(?)

Alex being cleared to play, while a courageous story, was the worst possible outcome for the team in terms of winning.

If Alex failed his physical, the Skins could have put him on the PUP and gained 12M in future cap credits. Since he passed the physical, you cant PUP him, no 12M in cap credit and he will have to carry 3 QBs on the active roster. An active roster spot that will be taken by a player that will not be taking a single snap all season.

Best case scenario - he failed the physical, we carry 2 Qbs, we get 12M in cap credit, cut him in 2021 and absorb about 10M in dead cap.

You’re right about the 3 Qb’s and cap credit BUT if Alex can help Haskins to have a good year and can mentor him to the level of being the future franchise QB for the next decade, wouldn’t it be worth it???

When was the last time the WFT had a young, franchise QB with a bright and long-time future? Green? Rhypien? (RG3 was a one-season wonder, but got hurt before that season even ended), Theisman? Smith helped Dwayne last season and will do the same this year, as long as Haskins can keep growing.
